Girls Place 1st At City Meet Coach Cindy Heath's girls' volleyball team was highly skilled and very successful in 1974, but once again they failed to make the state tournament. Only the first place team in each regional tournament goes to the state. VVest placed sec- ond, losing to Topeka High, whom they had beaten three times in previous matches. In addition to Topeka High, West had beaten SM North, Perry-Lecompton, Emporia, Lawrence, SM Northwest, Hayden and Highland Park. They lost to SM South and to Lawrence in a rematch at the Highland Park Invitational, when the squads were battling for first place. The Chargers captured first place in the city meet at High- land Park but managed only seventh place in the one-game round-robin Sunflower League tournament. West fought its way into the finals at the regional tourna- ment, but in their fourth match of the season against Topeka High they lost 15-12, 10-15 and 12-15.
