Chargers Capture State Title Topeka West cross country coach joe Schrag had every rea- son to be optimistic about the 1974 season. The entire team that captured fourth in the state in 1973 was returning for anoth- er season. His runners didn't let him down. They swept every meet and brought the title of State Champions to Topeka West. The Chargers placed first of nine teams in their first meet, the Wamego Invitational. In the Emporia Invitational they took the first six places, beating three other teams for first. In the Topeka West Invita- tional, all seven Charger run- ners finished in the top 10, with senior Bill Myers finishing sec- ond to lead the team. Myers was also the top run- ner for the Chargers in the next two meets, the Marysville Invi- tational and the junction City Invitational, which West won to remain undefeated. The Sunflower League meet was only slightly more difficult as the Chargers took five out of the top 10 spots, winning the league title for the first time ever. In the regional meet West placed first with all seven runners in the top 11. The state meet, held at the Salina airport course for the ninth straight year, proved to be the harriers' toughest chal- lenge. West could put only five runners in the top 20, but that was easily enough to take the state championship. Dave Folz led the team by placing fifth. Tom Vernon placed tenth, Kendall Smith took thirteenth, Myers six- teenth, and Tim Powell seven- teenth. The season's ninth straight team effort by the Chargers gave them the Kansas 4-A State Championship. 160
