With a wicked smile on her face, Debbie Waddle glances at her notebook to help her with her assignment while other classmates look on. BELOW: Acting as the leader of the pack. M r. Misner in the fun with the class members in an exciting and vigorous game: i Languages Offer New Experiences Speaking in a strange language, practicing foreign customs, and eating traditional foods were just a few of the activities of the foreign language classes. Topeka West offered four lan- guages, French, German, Spanish and Latin. Each language was available at four different levels. First year students gained a general knowledge of the language through vocabulary, spelling bees and simple conversations. Students explored the language in greater depth the second year. As the understanding increased, so did the many activities. German students sponsored Oktoberfest, a German festival, while French classes attended the play L'Avare in Kansas City.
