YESTERDAY was 1861-Tomorrow is 1962-Today
is the momentary bridge that links two centuries, so
recently Tomorrow, so soon another Yesterday. Only
once in Forever comes the magic hour when a State
reaches its century mark. Kansas, born on a cold Janu-
ary 29th in 1861 has reached the ultimate in veneration
-extolled for its virtues, excused for its faults, loved as
a homeland, and prodded into renewed vigor.
In its near-century of existence, Topeka High School,
as a mid-plain educational institution, has grown along
with Kansas, exploring, enduring, exulting, and evaluat-
ing its purposes. To dedicate a yearbook to past, present,
and future generations is too big an attempt, too vast a
presumption. But to commemorate a milestone and to
make a permanent record of a year is within our reach.
So quickly do the Todays become Yesterdays and the
Tomorrows come alive as new and promising Todays,
that memory needs reinforcement.
Cn these pages are recorded the happenings of a
school year. May they recall the pleasures of those events
and also be reminders of the backdrop which is Mid-
America and our fine heritage-
KANSAS, 1861--1961
