.1 'l' - Z ll. , ll The Quill And Tome Club President .............................................,.................. Isaac L. MERRILL, ja. Serrelary-Treasurer ......... .......... G EORGE H. LARK Faculty Advisor. ......... .............. M R. BASFORD HE QUILL AND TOME CLUB has had a very successful year. Much good literature has been read and discussed by its members, who have all seemed to take an active part and a keen interest in its work. There have been more outside speakers than in previous years, and each has furthered the enjoyment of the members of the Club. At the first meeting of the year Mr. Basford spoke briefly on the nrles and purpose of the club, the latter of which he explained as to give a fuller and wider knowledge of modern literature than the ordinary reading requirements necessitate. Helvensron then spoke on The Americanization of Edward Bok, an interesting autobiography. Nine more boys were elected to membership. The second meeting was featured by a talk by Diggs on Dean Briggs. Mr. Basford also explained the use of the Club's library. At the next meeting Mr. Charles Lemmi, of Goucher College, spoke on the subject of Games in Connection with Eng- lish Literature. Five more boys were elected to membership just before the next meeting, at which Hanway gave a short talk on jeffrey Farnol, and Merrill reviewed john Brown's Body. Two weeks later Mr. Basford reviewed Point Counter Point, and was followed by Law, who spoke on Booth Tarkington and two of his works. Mr. Donald Kirkley, dramatic critic for the Baltimore Sun,,' addressed the club at the last meeting before THE TRAIL goes to press on Movies as the Most Dangerous Competitor of Literature. On the night of February 22nd, ushering in the festivities of the Mitl-Winter Prom. two plays, The Man who Died at Twelve O'clock', and Deceivers , were presented before the Student Body and its visitors. Claggett, Teer, and Rowan supplied the talent for the first, the story of which took place in a small negro cabin in the back-woods of North Carolina. In the second play, a light farce of jealous married life, Russ Cameron convincingly played the very beautiful wife of the rather hard-boiled Bert Root, while Dick Bettes, as a gentleman bandit, furnished the second-story work. All honor must be conferred on those who were instrumental in painting and setting up the scenes. Too much credit cannot be given to Mr. Basford for his able direction and patient coaching of the plays. Tome is looking forward to another excellent entertain- ment from its actors just before Commencement. 94 f XX l Ki - Nah Eigbly-llzree
