The 1929 TRAIL '9qL.y . ' Y ' , . '. ,. libi Society Baseball URING THE BASEBALL SEASON of 1928 the All-Society team played a total of eight games. Although five of them were lost, the game which meant the most to Tome, that with Gilman, was won by the score of 6-2. The two games lost to the Havre de Grace High School, both of the games in which the Port Deposit team vanquished the Tome representation, the two meets won by West Nottingham, and the contests with St. Paul, Bel Air, and Gilman, from which Tome emerged triumphant,-all composed the schedule of the All-Society aggregation. As the season progressed, a constant improvement of the players was keenly apparent, coming to a climax in a well-deserved victory over Gilman. Kirkpatrick turned in a perfect fielding record, while Jenness possessed the honor of having the highest batting average. The team was in no way a crack group of baseball players, yet each boy exerted a considerable amount of energy, which gives that body of fellows a certain distinction. Limited-Weight Baseball The Tome Midgets brought their season to a successful close by a 12-3 win over Gilman. Of the six games on the schedule they were able to take live with little difficulty, losing only one of the two games with Swarthmore Prep. The Hrst game was played against a Port Deposit team, which was easily won by the Hill boys, 13-4. The same aggregation composed the next opposition, and again met defeat, this time 11-4. After a week of hard practice the Swarthmore Prep Juniors were met on the home field and defeated 17-10. Later on, in a game at Swarthmore, the same team defeated the Midgets 8-3. Port Deposit elementary school was then beaten 25-1. The last game of the season was won easily enough, Tome outclassing the traditional Gilman rivals in every phase of the game. Reynolds' excellent pitching and batting earned for him the honor of being the team's most valuable player. Craig, third sacker, and Lee, catcher and outfielder, also played a good brand of ball throughout the season. One Hundred and Tbirly-nine

The 1929 TRAIL 'wad e --e - ff Abs? score. Virgien, G. Nettleton, and Medill in the field and Rorty in the 220-yard dash all won first places for the home team. The next meet was a defeat at the hands of St. james, the score being 482 to 41 M. The visitors proved themselves much more formidable than had been expected, winning five first places. Exceedingly handicapped by her concession of the mile relay, Tome lost to her ancient Gilman foe by a 60-62 score the meet which closed the track season. The 21 feet broad jump by Tome's young and diminutive athlete, Willard Neu, is worthy of note. First places in the meets were halved by the two teams. At a track banquet held a few days after the Gilman meet G. Nettleton was elected captain and Root manager of the next year's team. The Hillman Prize, offered yearly at commencement to the man displaying most increased track ability, was won by Medill, the pole vaulter. Those winning their major letters were: Neu, Virgien, Birke, Medill, Rorty, G. Nettleton, Einwachter, Day, and Hix. a ,- '.,'3- .H f eati, '41, .gg-.1 fd .t Ag .-iff. - fnaiira.-:.
