lf' xi i w Tennis N ACCOUNT of the inexperience of the members of the 1928 tennis team and the stellar aggregations comprising the hard schedule, the Tome netmen had a poor season. The loss by graduation of three regulars was a severe blow, Barron and Wise alone remaining as a nucleus for a new team. It finished its year of competition of ten matches with three won and seven lost. The first match of the year, against Loyola, was won easily by the Tome team, the visitors lone tally being the result of a doubles match with Barron and Bulkley. The next match of the year, that with Western High School, of Washington, proved disastrous, chalking up the first defeat against Tome in two years. In this encounter Bulkley and Thackera won easily, while Wilke and Thackera were the only Tome doubles victors. The following week the team won from Severn by the score of 6-1. On Saturday the second defeat of the year was suffered at the hands of the Lawrenceville netmen, Wilke being the only Tome man to win from that strong team. The Hill racqueteers proved to be another obstacle in the path of Tome tennis victories. The four singles matches were split evenly, but both doubles contests went to the visitors. Barron and Wilke, both playing exceptionally fine tennis, won their matches, but Thackera and Bulkley lost in straight sets. The doubles matches proved doubly interesting, but Hill annexed both to win easily. The next two matches resulted in defeats by Wilmington and Lancaster, the former winning by the decisive score of 7-0 and the latter coming out on top of a 5-2 count. Forest Park also snatched a victory from the Tome netmen. The matches were hard- fought and interesting. It appeared at first that Tome was headed towards victory, but the final score was 4-5 for the visitors. Gilman, the final and, undoubtedly, the most important match of the season, was also dropped by the Tome racquet-toters by the margin of one point, the score being 5-4. Of the six singles matches each team won three. Captain Barron, Thackara, and DeVausney were all victorious in exceptionally hard fought matches. The Tome netmen were able, however, to take only one of the doubles encounters because of the excep- tiohnal playing of the Roland Parkers. At the close of the season Cating was chosen to captain the 1929 team. One Hundred and Thirty-fue
