Eight out of the ten dual matches were won, besides Captain Mackie's winning the Maryland Interscholastic Cham- pionships. The tourney held at Greenwich, however, was a great disappointment, for not a man qualified for the first sixteen. In the first match, with Swarthmore Prep, every man won his three points under the Nassau system, which was used throughout the year, making the score 12-0, an easy victory for the Tome linksmen. Captain Mackie had broken his ankle, and so in this match and the four following ones, the teams was forced to get along without his valu- able playing. Thus Merrill, Lanman, Hanway, and Bettes played in the order named. Owing to rain, it was impossible to complete the Wilmington Country Club match. The next conflict, that with Wilmington High School, was a decisive victory for Tome, the score being HM-M. The match was very one-sided, as may be inferred from the score, and did not afford much interest to the spectators. Then came the first defeat, at the hands of Lawrenceville. This match was played in a steady downpour. Bettes and Lanman won three and two points respectively. All others went to the opponents, making the score 7-5. The match with Friends School of Baltimore was a two man match. Bettes and Hanway distinguished themselves by making lik points to the visitors' lyz. From the triangular meet, in which Tome met City and Poly, Tome easily emerged One Hundred and Thirty-one

In the Maryland Interscholastics, Mackie, defending his last year's title, tied for first place with Hanway, of Tome, and O'Brien, of Loyola. In the play-off, however, Mackie was the victor. The match with Hill was one of the most interesting of the season. The score resulted in a tie, 6-6. The absence of Merrill was keenly felt. Next came the most important golf event of all, the Eastern Interscholasrics. Tome's showing was not up to expectations, sixth place being won by the Blue and White. Orcutt, of Lawrenceville, won the individual championship. Without much trouble Tome crushed Peddie. The match was uninteresting, the final score being Mya-lb. Western High School, of Washington, D. C., met defeat at the hands of Tome. This match, too, was one-sided, as the score, 18-0, shows. The Penn Fresh match was a close one. Here Tome had to work for its points. The course was new to all the Tome men, but, nevertheless, they won by the score of 7545. The final match of the season with Lancaster High, was an easy victory for the Tome men. They won The spring tournament between Tome men alone, was won by Merrill, who defeated Lanman 3 and 2 in the finals. The team and its coach, Mr. Veveridge, deserve much credit for the Hne season's record. At the end of the season Merrill was chosen to lead the team through the fol- lowing season. ' '99 u +V mg?
