The 1929 TRAIL cgdza- ' i ,WY 1, i Y j f.. j ' :TDQQ The next week, however, Tome encountered City College of Baltimore, which dealt out the first defeat of the year to Coach Klee's men, who were decidedly outclassed, and there was at no time doubt of the outcome, the day ending with an adverse tally of 6-1. Corbi, City's star pill-twirler, baffled the Tomesters completely, and allowed only a few scratch hits. The boys from the Susquehanna heights were decidedly off form, and both batting and fielding were sluggish. In the first major game of the season Tome showed great form in defeating its formidable adversary, Lawrenceville, 9-6. The whole team played 10075 better ball than that which it exhibited against City, and Sansbury showed up excellently in the box. The Maryland State Normal game being called off by jupiter Pluvius, the Blue and White journeyed to Hill, and was defeated 6-2. Tome's playing was again indif- ferent, Chalmers being the only one to show up to regular form. Peddie, the strongest adversary as yet tackled, bowed to the Susquehannites, 10-7, on May 19th. Tome showed fine field-work, and the batting in the pinches was outstanding. Bailey pitched his usual steady game, keeping the visitors in check at all times. The following Wednesday Tome encountered Princeton Prep, and was squashed, 12-5. Princeton Prep had one of the best teams seen here in years, and the Blue and White was utterly outclassed in every respect. Coach Ollie Klee's charges received their fourth defeat at the hands of the Princeton Freshmen, by the close score of 7-6. The game remained tight through nine innings, and the winner was not crowned until the last ball had been pitched. The team played an excellent brand of ball, but seemed to be the victim of bad breaks. The Chester High School game having been cancelled on account of inclement weather, the team keyed itself up for the final great game with Gilman. In the first two rotations the Blue and Gray rushed out and gained a 3-1 lead over their traditional foes, the Blue and White. Then Tome snapped out of its dopey lethargy and started to get busy. Throughout the rest of the struggle the gentlemen from the Roland Park district were held scoreless, and the sun set on a scoreboard favoring the Kleemen, 8-5. Craig starred at bat, making three hits, while Gillespie performed well in the box. The terminating of the season by a victory over Gilman totally blotted out the several less important defeats of the year. Wins over Peddie and Lawrenceville in themselves very plainly showed that the Tome diamond devotees were capable of producing a very high-grade sort of baseball and individual playing as well as team-work was remarkable. Captain Koppe was consistently good throughout the season, and the entire infield proved one of the strongest assets to the team. Chalmers and Archer led the team in batting, while Bailey and Sansbury were the stellar pitchers. At a meeting of the squad at the close of the season Bailey was elected Captain and Curtis King Manager for 1929. One Hundred and Twenty-Eight
