Handicapped by the loss of several valuable mem- bers of last year's team, and held to the disadvantage of working with many new recruits, Coach Ryan turned out a delegation worthy to represent Tome. Through the winning of the South Atlantics at Baltimore, Tome's aggregation proved itself still the predomi- nating power in that sport in this section of the country, winning the annual contest for the sixth consecutive time. Not long after the Thanksgiving vacation the first practice was called, the result being that more than fifty candidates, of which approximately one-sixth were letter men of last year's team, reported for training. After several weeks of intensive work- outs the varsity squad was cut to less than half that number. Captain Bastian, Wise, I-Ianway, Murphy, Hawtin, Craven, Cummings, and Spallholz composed the structure about which the team was built while Palmros, Boyce and Beaudry added new strength to it. As Christmas vacation interrupted the preliminary training period, the first meet was not staged until january sixteenth. Upon that date the team succumbed to Central High School at Washington, losing by the score of 39-29. Only three first places were secured by the Tome swimmers, Bastian and Spallholz doing best. In general the times for the different events were not up to the usual standard. Unfortunately, the competition at the Penn Interscholastics, to which the natators next journeyed, proved too stiff for Tome's representation. Nor did Mercersburg, a bitter rival of Tome in this phase of sports, fare any better there. The few points to Tome's credit were secured by Bastian, who finished fourth in the 220-yard event, and the 200-yard relay team, which managed to tie for third place in its race. West Catholic High won the important contest. However, fate smiled thereafter on Coach Ryan's men, for the remainder of the One Hundred and Twenty-three
