'F' The 1929 TRAIL as A . .ana Limited Weight Football HEN THE CALL for candidates of the 130-lb. football team was made, much good material reported to Coach Pat Ryan, who at once, started to build up one of the strongest limited-weight teams that has been seen here for several years. After a few weeks of practice the eleven scrimmaged the Olympians, who were easily superior. During the next few weeks the 130-pounders worked hard, and when they again scrimmaged the Olympians, they held them to a scoreless tie. The team next scrimmaged the Pythians, whom they held to a O-Q score. Under Coach Ryan's hard workouts the team steadily improved, and several times held the Pythians scoreless, while they consistently downed the Olympians. After the Pythians and Olympians had united into the All-Society, a game was held between them and the 130-pound gridders. To the surprise of the school the smaller and lighter team outplayed its heavier opponents, although there was no score. A little later in the season the plucky 130-pounders played their first outside game, with St. Paul, of Baltimore. The Tome team won by the score of 12-0. Pease and Pearson were outstanding, the former generalling the team in tip-top manner and the latteramaking many fine and spectacular runs. One week remained before the most important game, that with the Gilman fourth team. The team worked hard and steadily, but Gilman took advantage of one of the many breaks of the game, and scored the only touchdown on a recovered fumble. The Midget football team, under the able coaching of Mr. Page, enjoyed one of its most successful seasons of recent years. The team won all but one of the games played, and showed superior football throughout the season. The first game was with a pickup team from Port Deposit, which the Midgets beat by a safe margin. The next game, with Swarthmore, was more evenly matched, and the Tomesters emerged at the top of a 7-6 score. Zerby starred for the Midgets, scoring the touchdown and the Cxffa POIHK. A game with a Perryville team served as a primer for Gilman. Then came the final and long awaited game. The Roland Park opponents were heavier, and although the Tome boys displayed splendid playing, they were downekd by the Gilman gridders to the tune of 19-14. The entire game was hard fought by both teams, and the deciding score came in the last few minutes of play. Xu 'IF I Viv One Hundred and Nine

, F tai C ross-Country New VARs1'rY SPORT is born. Under the direction of Coach Turtle, for the first time in the school's history, a Cross-Country team was started last Fall. Six boys reported in the early days of practice, but the number steadily increased, until at the end of the season almost twenty were on the squad. Spallholz, W., was elected Captain and Weyersburg Manager. The first meet, that with Maryland Freshmen, was held here on November 10th between the halves of the Woodberry Forest football game. Owing to the superior age and experience of their opponents, although the Tome boys ran well, they were nosed out by the score of 51 to 25. Eleven days later the team journeyed up to Philadelphia, where it got second in an invitation race with six Philadelphia high schools in Fairmont Park. A third meet with Wilmington High School was cancelled by the latter. At a meeting in December Red Nichols was elected Captain of the 1929 team and Woodbury Manager. Four varsity letters were awarded at the end of the season to Spallholz, W., james, jones, and Weyersburg, manager.
