The 1929 TRAIL Sd . - . f. .. 2-W L - - f- fe ie-f f ' Y '59, showed considerable improvement over its past games and deserved a much better fate. The individual playing of Nathanson, the Princeton Prep quarterback, was the feature of the game. The attack which the coaches had planned and the squad had worked on was spoiled by weather conditions. The next week a remarkable unscored-on eleven from Woodberry Forest journeyed up to defeat the home team by a 24-O score. Although the Tome warriors, backed by unusual cheering in the stands, fought with a vim surpassing any previous display, the fast Virginia eleven outplayed them completely. Buery, the Woodberry halfback who scored four touchdowns, by speed and general ball-carrying ability proved himself one of the best backs ever seen on the Tome gridiron. Tome's rather extensive air attacks during the first of the game met with little success. Wilmington High School succumbed 19-O to a bewildering Blue and White run- ning and passing attack at Wilmington. The Tome backheld, aided by the sensational work of Koppe, was at its best. The whole team, in fact, seemed well prepared to meet Gilman on the next Saturday for the seasonls climax. In the traditional game with Gilman, before three thousand highly excited spec- tators, the Tome gridiron men played above their heads, outclassing any brand of foot- ball they had shown throughout the season and winning 13-6. Only in the last and nerve-wracking fourth quarter, when Gilman's passes were more than usually abundant, and when her rally against 13,0 odds manifested itself in a seventy yard run for touch- down on a pass to Lowndes and shorter completed passes, did the Baltimoreans show decisive superiority over their antagonists. To Harold Koppe, who seemed to be the only man on either team who could make consistent gains by direct end running and line plunging, and who made both of Tome's touchdowns, and to Captain Scott, who broke up so many of Gilman's passes and played so well otherwise, especial praise is due. At the annual football banquet held at the close of the season Walser Hawrin was elected next year's captain and the major letters were awarded to Walser and Freeman Hawtin, Bettes, Dunlay, Earl, Jenness, Law, Lucid, Haas, White, K., Scott, Milford, Shepherd, Koppe, Bailey, Hite, Taylor, Sansbury, and Manager Bruneel. t we Q I .
