511.6303 Gerstberger was our, friend .and our teacher. He passed away on September 8 1952 Most of us here at olleson Union High School knew h1m only for a year. It didn't take any of us even that long to realize what -a wonderful man he was. LeRoy Gerstberger was born January, 1919, in Dodge City, Kansas. He always maintained a high scholastic stand- ing and was an honor student of his class, being the salutatorian. His classmates recognized his leadership ability and as a high school senior he was elected to the presidency of both the Boys' Club and Kappa Society. The same year he served as honorary football captain. He was always an active, participating member in every organization to which he belonged. He enrolled in Southwestern College, Winfield, Kansas in 1937, and fouryears later received his Bachelor of Arts Degree. He was a member of the Athenian Literary Society. In 1941, be married Violet King, and they had two children, Richard and Zenita. LeRoy attended school during the summer and received his Master's Degree in Education at Greeley, Colorado in 1950. He also completed one summer's work toward a Doctorate Degree in Education. While at Greeley, he was selected as a member of the Phi Delta Kappa Literary Society, an organization whose membership consists only cf students whose grades are in the upper ten percent. LeRoy's life's ambition was to be a teacher and he served in that capacity in many Kansas schools. Every one with whom he was associated respected him highly. His even disposition and calm manner was always a steadying influence for the teams he coached. He was never too busy to help when needed. His teaching career was interrupted by World War II. He served in the Air Corps 29 months, and was transferred to the Infantry and received his discharge in January, 1946. In October, 1950, his teaching career was again interrupted when, as an inactive rescrvist, he was recalled to duty and sent to the Korean front. He returned home lay 28, 195L That fall he accepted a teaching and coaching position here in Tolleson but was forced to resign in March, 1952 because of the Illness which took his life. . ' We, of Tolleson Union High School, wish to dedicate our 1953 Year Book to LeRoy Gerstberger who embodied all that a man should be. He was to us a friend and teacher, but to others with whom he came in contact, he was also many other things. A good student, a religious man, a fine husband, a loving and understanding father and a courageous soldier. We remember then, the oft quoted lines, The good die youn 1 g'f..t,.vf...'
