vtvgzifm SWR By Donny Ryan Under the leadership of a new coach, Dom Patrone, the Tolleson High School football team racked up a record of four wins and six losses. Playing one of the roughest schedules in the school's history, in- cluding seven conference and three non-conference games, the Wolverines made a real fine showing. 'f In the season's opener, played at Tolleson, the Wolverines played the highly regarded Chandler Wolves. It was a rough, close game I3-7 victory. all the way, but when the final gun sounded, Tolleson had itself a well earned The following Saturday, thegMaroon and Gold Footballers journeyed to Miami. Tolleson's offensive plays couldn't get started I9-0 score. The next opponents were down to the Ajo goal line, and the Vandals emerged as victors with the Wolverines on the short end of a Ajo's rugged Red Raiders. All through the contest the Wolverines drove right but they just couldn't seem to lug it over. The Wolverines finally scored with three minutes left in the game. The missed extra point made the difference as Ajo was the winner by a 7-6 score. Tolleson tried desperately to get their hands on the ball in the closing minutes of the game but Ajo held onto the pigskin to scrape through by one point. The fourth game was against the arch enemy, the Litchfield Owls. Tolleson was favored to win, but as previous contests had proven, anything is possible when these two teams meet. The Wolverines came through as expected, however, and won the contest by a I4-7 score. For the seniors on the team, this marked the fourth victory in their four years of competition with the Owls. The Scottsdale Beavers provided the opposition for the Wolverines next tussle. Tolleson couldn't seem to get rolling and they succumed to their perennial road jinx, as the Beavers came out on top by a score of I8-7. Playing their next game at home the Wolverines fared much better against Peoria. The Maroon and Gold played one of their better games as they walloped the Panthers to the tune of 42-0 The traditionally tough Buckeye Hawks, playing heads up ball before a Homecoming crowd, romped over the lackadaisical Wolverines 40-l3. Bouncing back from this loss, Tolleson won their next game by the score of 26-I2 from the Parker Broncs. For their next game the Wolverines traveled to pins, the Casa Grande Cougars. The Cougars really and fleet backs. Casa Grande won going away by an The last game of the season was played against poured Casa Grande to play the East Central Conference king- it on as they displayed an array of big linemen overwhelming 66-6 score. Carver's mighty Monarchs. Carver was heavily favored to trounce Tolleson, on the basis of their season's record of nine wins and no losses, plus the fact that they had established several scoring records while compiling these nine victories. Shortly after the game started, however, the Wolverines showed that they were going to be no pushover for Carver. Tolleson marched to a first period touchdown, but they downs to win I3-7. The Wolverines made a real scoring threat in the last and Tolleson came within one foot of pilling the season's the ball for the remaining few plays.
