OnSeptember 7, 1936, school days started for twenty-four little i youngsters. Some would leave us and some would join our class, but we didn't worry about that because we were surveying our new surroundings. We greeted our first teacher, Miss Conagen, who was to be in charge of us. We were a little afraid at first but we soon got over that and got down to work learning our numbers and letters. Those who started the first year of school were: Glen Burky, Ross Eckstein. Naomi Fried, Marjorie B aker, Leland Sturnp, Leona Stump, C harles Magers, Marlin C ole, Cordelia Schiefer, and Ruth Graham. These people are still going to Tiro High School and are now preparing to graduate. The rest of the boys and girls who started that first year were: Donald Amstutz, Agnes Mitchell, Jacqualine Auck, Norma Cole. W inigene C line, Georgene B ruce , Mary B uck, C lara S imons , Phyllis C ole , Harold Johnson, Junior Rheinbolt, John Rank, Keith C lawson, and B ill Burns. Those who left the same year were Jacqualine Auck, John Rank, and Harold Johnson. In the second grade no one joined us but C laraSimons left. Our teacher was l Miss Nancy McMahon. The third grade saw Betty B evier enter and Winigene Cline and Agnes Mitchell leave. Our teacher was Miss Mathews. We had a busy fourth year when Walter Haga. Helen Buck, Deloris Hopkins. and Helen Fagan entered and Norma Cole, Mary B uck, Helen B uck, Georgene B ruce. and Donald Amstutz left us. Our instructer for this year was Miss Cruea. In the fifth year Mrs. Stone was our teacher. Phyllis Cole and B ill Burns left us and Mary Johnson joined our class. For our last year down stairs we had Mrs. Stone for teacher. Mary Johnson left after being in our school a little more than a year. By this time we were beginning to feel big because we were going up stairs in the fall. Happily we climbed the stairs to the seventh grade, feeling very grown-up. Until she became ill, our sponsor was Miss Bauer. Mrs. Miller was our teacher for the rest of the year. At the beginning of the school year Robert Williams entered from Plymouth, Rose Steele from North Robinson and Olin Davis from Shilon. Later Florence Auck entered from New Washington. Walter Haga left during the latter part of the year. Our eighth grade sponsor was Miss Frisch. Robert Williams and Olin Davis left our class during this year. Deloris Hopkins moved to Sulphur Springs. Franklin Zorns and Keith C lawson each moved to New Washington. We began our first year of high school with the following: Ruth Graham. C ordelia Schiefer, Naomi Fried, Helen F agan, B etty B evier, Florence Auck. Leona Sturnp, Leland Stump, Glen Burky, Kenneth Pfahler. Rose Steele, Ross Eckstein. C harles Magers, Charles Studer, Albert Miller, Junior Rheinbolt.Hazi1Lohr. Marlin Cole, and Marjorie Baker. We were initiated by the Sophomores, during this. our Freshman Year. As our class sponsor for the year, we had Miss Carpenter. 10 Our Sophomore Year is very memorable for the ordering of our class rings. qw hat a timefj Mr. Kinney was our sponsor the first semester and Mr. Hanlin the second semester. We gave the annual high school party during November with Rietshlin's Orchestra playing. Kenneth Pfahler, Junior Rhienbolt and C harles Studer left: Charles moved to New Washington. The arrival of our class rings were delayed and they arrived in our Junior Year after the class a year younger than we had received theirs, much to our envy. The Junior Class Play The BabySitter was presented November Z5, 1947. We gave the Junior and Senior Prom, on April 30, 1948, in the auditorium. Our class motto is Row Not Drift and the class colors are gold and blue. The class flower is the yellow rose. Geraldine Haymond and Effie Zeigler entered at the beginning of the year. Eleanor Leonhart joined our class at the beginning of the second semester. Near the end of the year Albert Miller moved to New Washington. Our sponsor was the same as in our Sophomore Year, Mr. Hanlin. Sixteen students came back in the fall of 1948 to complete their Senior Year. They are: Florence Auck, Betty Bevier, Glen Burky, Ross Eckstein, Naomi Fried. Ruth Graham, Eleanor Leonhart, Marlin Cole, Charles Magers, Helen Fagan, Leona Stump, Leland Stump, Ross Eckstein, Rose Steele, Effie Zeigler, and Marjorie B aker. Our graduation pictures were taken by Mfr. DeVito in November. B accalaureate services were held May ZZ, 1949 with Rev. Danavan Hochstettler as speaker. Commencement exercises were May 25, 1949. Our speaker was Rev. D. N. Roller frozn Mansfield. The boys wore blue gowns and the girls white. Both wore tassels that were a combination of gold and blue. My SCHIEFER drove us to the boat dock, where the ship was being refueledwith COLE. After we arrived aboard ship the bow lines were taken from the STUMPS . and we were off. Being much excited and curious we decided to tour the ship. The first thing we noticed, hanging in one of the corridors, was a picture of Alexander GRAHAM Bell, which was painted in FLORENCE , Italy. Just as we were entering the dining hall, the BAKER, carrying a tray of hot fel ROSS buns, got a CHARLEY horse in his leg, and slipped and fell, durnping the buns into the lap of a woman. sitting at one of the tables. 12 The woman became very angry and yelled ' EF FIE wouldn t have BEN so clumsy I BET TY wouldn t have fallen and rulned my best dress I ll SUE lum I IISUE hzm By now a large crowd had gathered but the woman was fmally qu1eted and we saw the BAKER -STEELE away to the kltchen As we were rather tlred we went to our Cabln and decided to rest before dlnner That evening at dxnner we met the captam who had a BUTCH haircut He was rather handsome and I whlspered to my compan1on KIN NEY dance? I C LASS IPROPI-IEC Y One afternoon in August, 1959, I found myself in my little Ford on my way to the train station at Bucyrus, Ohio. I wanted to spend the winter where it was warm, so I purchased a ticket for California. I had to hurry to catch the train as it was about time for it to leave. I found a seat by the window so I could have a good view of the scenery, for I knew I had a long ride ahead of me. I got tired of watching the scenery so I went to the dinning car as I was getting rather hungry. There were no empty seats so I asked a young lady if she would mind if I sat with her. She said she had no objections so I sat down and we were having a friendly conversation when all of the sudden it came to my mind that I had seen her some place else. I asked her what her name was and I could have fainted when she told me she was CordySchiefer, and old classmate of mine, back at good old Tiro. Where are you going, I asked Cordy? i Cordy replied, I'm going to Denver, Colorado, but I'll only be there a couple of days. I was chosen as one of the best softball players in the U. S. Would you like to go to California with me after the game is over, I asked. Cordy replied, I will, providing you stay in Denver with me. We stayed at the Ziz-Z ag Hotel in Denver. When we went into the hotel a young lady met us at the door. Well, if it isn't Effie Zeigler! We exclaimed. We talked to Effie about our good old times back in school. Have you seen any of our classmates since we graduated, I asked. Effie said, I have seen Marlin Cole a few times and he owns the 'Harmony Valley Ranch' just out of town. Early the next morning Effie, C ordy, and I went to the ranch to see Marlin. We didn't stay very long as Cordy had to be back to play in the afternoon softball game. After the game was over, we went to the hotel to pack our things because we had decided to take a.n airplane to California instead of the train. We were to catch the plane at 8:30 p.m. Once again we were on our way. When the airline hostess showed us to our quarters we found ourselves face-to-face with Marjorie B aker. Cordy and I went to the ladies' lounge because we were rather tired. We were surprised again when Marjorie came and told us that the Co-pilot wanted to see us. We were relieved very much when we saw Charles Magers, was the Co-pilot. We talked with Marjorie and Charles for a while. A The next morning Marjorie came and told us it was about time for us to get off. Marjorie asked to stay at her house and we accepted. That night I made a suggestion that we go to a show or something. We started to look through the papers to see what was on. I6 Cordy sa1d I would l1ke to see 'T he Rambhng B ells of T1ro starmg the Stuxnper Twins I never laughed so much in all my l1fe as I d1d that night watching Leona and Leland Sturnp performing I never dereamed that anyone out of our class would become an actress or an actor We went back stage to congratulate Leona and Leland on their fine performance It was st1l1 early and we Cordy Mai-Jorie Leona Leland and I dec1ded to to a small cafe a short distance from the theater The wa1tress who came and took our order was Florence Auck We talked w1thFlorence for awhile but she couldn t talk very long as the people kept coming 1n and the tables were all f1l11ng up Is it like this every night? I asked Florence No but tonight one of the greatest smgers of the world 1S to be here Florence replled We deczded we wouldn t stay for the program but before we left it had begun We didn t pay much attention to it unt1l we heard a familiar vo1ce We were happily sur pr1sed when Florence brought Helen Fagan the singer to our table We talked with Helen unt1l a late hour The next morn1ng Marjorie Cordy and I talked things over and dec1ded to go to HaWa11 One night when we were aboard the boat for Hawall It began to get rather windy out but above all the no1se I could hear some kind of mumblmg Th1s got on my nerves and I decided to go down to the lower deck When I got to the bottom of the steps some boxes, eager to see the slnger To my amazement there was Ross Ecksteln serenad1ng his wife with such a song What are you doing on th1s boat I asked? Ross replled My wife and I are go1ng to Hawa11 on our honeyrnoon Would you like to come to my cabin wluch Marjorie and Cordy occupy also? I asked They accepted and we had a chat about old times We were on the boat about f1ve days when we finally arrlved at Maul Hawan After I had walked down the gang plank with my luggage and was wa1t1ng for the rest of the party I must have fa1nted because I don t remember anythmg that happened for quite some txme In fact the f1rst th1ng I remember I was 1n bed at someone s home I couldn t thmk who in Hawau would take me 1nto h1s home so I asked MarJor1e who was Slttlng by the bed whose house I was in She told me lt was Mr Kmney s our sponsor back at T1ro Then I remembered why I had fa1nted I had seen Mr Kinney and it was such a shock after seeing most of our classmates that I Just famted The next day I felt better thanl had for qulte sometlme Mr Kinney showed us around ln the afternoon until his car broke down We finally got to a f1ll1ng stat1on where they fixed almost anything They told Mr K1nney he could have h1s car 1n three hours 17 I 1 n . I 1 n s 1 . go it sounded as if someone were singing I Wish I Was Single Again . I peeked around - We girls didn't know what to do for the next three hours so we decided to get our hair washed and set. We stopped at the first beauty parlor we came to. To our amazement there was B etty Bevier, a beautician. After we got our hair fixed we went shopping for some clothes of the type they wear in Hawaii. To our surprise we saw Ruth Graham, a clerk in the Honolu1uFashion Shop, a store that sells all kinds of clothing. By the time we got out of the store it was time to get the car. The car wasn't completely repaired when we got back but we waited because they said it would take only a little while longer. When it was finished a young man about twenty-seven who looked very familiar to me, drove it over to where Mr. Kinney and we girls were standing. To our surprise it was Glenn Burkey, another old class- mate from Tiro. We talked to Glenn for awhile and then went back to Mr. Kinney's house for dinner. That night after dinner was over Mr. Kinney took us to a Hula Hula dance. The dance was very good but I thought I would never get over seeing Naomi Fried and Eleanor Leonhart, their main guest, singing and doing the hula while the Hawiians played their ukuleles. That night Cordy and I decided we had better wire home for some money. The first thing the next morning we were in for 'another surprise. The girl who sent the telegram was Rose Steele, another classmate. That night Naomi, Eleanor, Betty, Ross and his wife, Ruth, Rose, Glen. Marjorie, Cordy, and I had a party at Mr. Kinney's house because Cordy, Marjorie, and I were going back to C alifornia the next day. When we got to C alifornia, C ordy and I took the first train back to Tiro. It surely felt good to get my feet back on home soil again. Rose S teele Florence Auck 18 FAREWELL TO THE SENIORS To The Seniors: It has been a priviledge and a pleasure to be advisor and friend to the 1949 graduating class of Tiro High School. The members of this class need only preserve and continue their characteristic loyalty and co-operation to insure future success in thier chosen fields of endeavor. I hope, and feel, that the graduation exercise of 1949 need not be the end of a pleasant association but that such association will continue in the years to come. To the Senior Class of 1949, farewell, with the wish that each of you may en- joy the best that the years may bring. S uperintendent, Dale B . Kinney We, the Junior C lass of 1949, in saying farewell to the Seniors, wish to ex- press our appreciation of their companionship and friendliness in the years we have gone to school with them. They have filled an important place in the life and activities of this school. We are proud of the record they have made and the example they have set for us to follow. We sincerely rejoice with them in the achievement of a goal toward which they have long been working.
