It should not be o stopping point but only a place to hestitate for a look ahead, because education is a process that continues throughout lite. Whether or not one is able to go on with formal education, growth must continue. One of the important ob- iectives of the high school is to help young people recognize the necessity of continuing education and to provide them with the incentives, skills, and will to take increasing responsibility for their own continuing growth and development. We, your faculty friends, hope that we have developed each member of this graduating class toward this obiective. Sincerely yours, ZQWLMLK! GCLLA Mr. Kulielze, Science, Mr. Marasich, English. This year the aftair was held in the Saddle and Sirloin Club of the Stock Yards lnn on May twentieth. Invitations to this event are extended on the basis of points earned by perfect attendance, high grades, participation in school activities, and special service to the school. On this evening there is enacted the traditional ceremony of the sword, the shield and the buckler. The ceremony is an inspiration to mythical Knights of Tilden to hold fast to their ideals through life. iI"fy'5QC0l'l6! .fdfllfllflaf .X4CAiQUQlfl1Ql'll Qlilfllflel' 1-J S Y 0l'l0I" The Hon p e o students with no mark below "E." The Junior Chorus under the direction of Mr. John Stephens, is made up of the younger boys. Both groups mix fun with practice and spend some time on "pop" tunes while they perfect the more difticult renditions. Programs were adjusted as students sought to settle into the normal, school routine. The football, soccer, basketball, wrestling, and baseball teams sent out the call for practice sessions. Clubs and organizations began to function again. The 4B class elected officers with the help of a voting machine. Seniors took the Chicago Motor Club driving test. The National Honor Society and Honor Club were pleased to receive Dr. John T. Rattaliatta as guest assembly speaker. Open house was held and Techmen got another chance to show oft their school. The soccer team, revived after a few years of retirement, came through to take second place in the city, losing to Schurz A to 3 in the last ten seconds. Blue Devil gridders started a fine season by winning their Hrst two games. They later went on to the semi-finals where they were defeated by a strong Austin team. Christmas vacation happily interrupted school life for two weeks as our basketball team went down-state to take third place in the Centralia Tournament. Senior Prom seemed to pass too quickly and another class graduated. A new semester began as bewildered treshies fell victims to seniors selling steam heated lockers. Blue Devil cagers won seven straight in league play to earn a playofi berth. Our hopes were shattered when Roosevelt tripped us by three points. Sweaters and rings were ordered by new AB s and Joe Tilden slipped into a lazy mood as spring fever attacked Teachers 'WG ,f g V31 ,st ff ,AT f C9 Q3 'Ri 62 5 il . .L , ..- f, . Tech diamondeers fought a see-saw battle with tour other contending teams and at last reports Tilden held first place. Seniors and their dates danced on air at their "Night of the Year." Only graduation could crowd prom memories out of their minds. After months of hard work and some fun of course, the 1952-53 year became a memory. U 2 f, 63 1 ea fp 1 K f: 'N 33 Q . 4 . ' Sk' U - To Tech men April means one thing-the Annual Tilden Homecoming and Circus. On this night Tildenites turn out as magicians, tight rope walkers, ghosts, and demons. Barkers lure numerous visitors into the gyp shows. Gypsies tell for- tunes. Fancy divers entertain in the pool. Danceland invites dancing feet. The T953 circus was a riot of fun. Kelvin with his Magic Violin, the Crystal Gazer, the Villains in Hades, and the in- habitants of the new planet Nedlit, set their patrons screeching with horror and hilarity. Salesmen unloaded tons of peanuts, popcorn, whistles, hats, orchids, and gadgets of all descriptions. The high light of the even- ing was the crowning of Til- den's queen, Bonnie Bernard, at the close of the assembly program. 64 1 ik i 1? - a 6 . TILDEN Tilden's fine line play was an important factor in the 19 to 13 conquest of Steinmetz. Co-Capt. Al Dimoglis and Cookie Deadrick starred as defense tackles for the Blue Devils while Co-Capt. Ed Swartz, Nick Grevan, and Dave Spiewak took the scoring honors with 6 points apiece. Semi-Finals Soldiers Field AUSTIN VS. TILDEN Austin with Woodson's superb offensive playing, downed Tilden 33 to 'I9 in the semi-finals. A tireless Tilden team fought to the last second. Co-Captain Al Dimoglis, injured in the second period, had stopped Abe Woodson time after time, earlier in the game. Tilden kept pace with Austin for nearly three full quar- ters with Dave Spiewak scoring first with a 2-yard plunge. Mel Fugett then made two brilliant 65 yard runs, one go- ing all the way for a score. X i X A A. Fugett and Dimoglis bring Gage Park man ta a halt. Regulars take a rest while second string carries on against Hirsch. These cheers of Tilden fans changed to gloom as Fenger plunged ahead in last seconds of game. Although our record was not as striking as the unequaled one of '52 when we had 25 wins and no losses, nevertheless we rolled up a very impressive total of 22 wins against 3 losses. Our losses were to Waukegan, Coach Hicks' home town, Thornton of Harvey, and New Trier of Wilmette, which took first place in the state. Tilden rated third place in the state. Our co-captains Mel Fugett and Jack Munroe did a wonderful iob by taking first place in the T54 and l75 pound classes respectively, John Robles added to our team total by taking second place in the ll2 pound division, The Grapplers took first place in the city tournament, In individual matches we captured 6 out of 12 first places. Although "Spin" established a fine record with the Junior Basketball teams, soccer was a new game to him and he found he had to learn even more than the boys. Few people expected Tilden to be a threat in the city league soccer race. Coach Salerio set up a stil? training program which paid oft. On a raw day in November the Blue Devils met Shurz for the city championship. While the team played valiantly, they lost to the Bulldogs in the final seconds of play. So ended a thrilling season!
