In 1852 traveling the overland trail across the hostile Rocky Mountains or taking the slow ocean voyage around the horn, the Hedges, the Galbreaths, the Ciminos, the Robbins, the Balls, the Days and the Sweeks bypassed the established Oregon City to settle along the banks of the Tualatin River on donation land claims. There they established a community, becoming the forefathers of many'residents who still till the soil they wrested from the wilderness or dwell in that same com- munity which became Tualatin. Harvey Scott, founder of the Oregonian and prominent in developing Oregon, was among the first teachers of the first school which was built of chinked logs in 1855 on land donated by john E. Hedges. From 1855 when a village took place on the banks of the Tualatin where settlers and trappers drove their wagons to Portland through'the nearby shallows, the town's history moved forward steadily. In 1867 the first permanent wooden bridge was constructed to replace the flat- ferry at Bridgeport now Bridgeport road on the west bank of the settlement. The bridge was built high over the river to allow passage of river boats. The first post office came in 1869. Courderoy roads to Portland caused Captain joseph Kellogg to abandon his Tualatin River boat line and two small steamboats, the Onward and the Yamhill, be- cause of the shallowness of river, Wayne Sagert started the first community freighting system in 1883 with a wagon and a span of sturdy horses. Edward Byron and john Sweek early settlers from Manchester, England, were responsible for building the second school on the Tualatin to replace the little log school in 1870 at the junction of Boones Ferry Road fHighway 2171 and Oregon City Road fnow Avery Roadj. It was Tualatin's pride and joy and served as a center for culture and religion for 30 years. Wagons rumbled close by to cause the frequent collapse of order and the stove pipe. The town was incorporated in 1915 and has proudly maintained that status ever since instituting well-lighted streets, a fire station, a mayor, police, and industry, a water department, post office, a park, and church, long before larger communities have been able to manage these progressions. Although the residents have enjoyed the peaceful friendliness of a small community, Tualatin's major highways, bisected by two railways, must foretell its growth. 5 ond floor.
