The question for debate this year was broad enough in scope to cover the subject matter of a whole course in economics and governmentg but Tifton's debaters, Howard Smith and Marion Aultman of the arlirmative and Bob Culpepper and joe W'ilson of the negative. tackled it with determination and interest. The negative speakers were victorious over Sumner's aflirmative team. but. unfortunately Tifton's jinx held good, and the atlirmative lost to Sylvester. None of the debaters will return next year. Undoubtedly the three boys already veterans in the field of irgumtnt, through low of the art will seek new laurels in college UREHE I IN LYYX I'I l I L L Ro LTI II' W IIILIL UI1 IIIILS X KJIX lflllll III! PACKERS VICTIMS OF BLUE DEVIL BLITZ MOULTRIF .. 0 O 0 12-12 TIFTON. . 6 14 15 0-35 The Blue Devils continued to build up their reputation in an impressive win over the Moultrie Packers. Tifton's Hrst score came on a 76-yard drive, cliinaxed by Parnell's 11-yard end run to pay dirt. Two more drives of 75 and 7I yards netted two additional touchdowns before the half. In the last Qlmrfi'rli.,,-lg on-ale, 5,f,,,f5 f,, l3,,1,,i,,, half Bostic sliced off-tackle for a 25- vard touchdown. This was quickly fol- lowed by a safety against Moultrie, resulting from a blocked punt. Late in the third period, Parnell faked .1 pass and dashed li yards to complete the Blue DeviI's scoring. Moultrie. refusing to be discouraged even though trailing 35-0, showed marvelous comeback to score twice in the last period over Tifton reserves. The lirst team of Blue Devils showed a smoothly co-ordinating offense which refused to be stopped. Chandler. llenderson, and Vfaldrop were outstanding on the line in one of the Inip's lines! exhibitions. THOMASVILLE BOWS I 9-0 THONIASVILLIQ . .. 0 ii 0 0- ii TIFTON .... .6 0 6 7-I9 On the fourth play from scrimmage, Herring repeated his performance in the Brunswick game by recovering a blocked punt for a touchdown. But after this score, the Devils were held at .i stand- still by a lighting team of Bulldogs until the third quarter. Iiarly in this period the Imps capitalized on a short Bulldog punt that was downed on the Thomasville 38, First, Mitchell gained Ill yards and then Mathis dashed through tackle for 28 yards and the touchdown. ln the last quarter Tifton marched 75 yards in six plays, with Bostie plunging to six points from the two. After this tally, both sides began substituting freely. Mitchell received his opportunity in this game, with Parnell on the side lines with an infected lip, and his performance was very capable. Mathis and Bowen both turnecl in fine performances. BLUE DEVILS WIN OVER LANIER "B" 39-7 LANIER "B" . . 0 7 0 0- 7 TIFTON . .21 6 6 6--39 Thankful for a "breather" before the all-important Albany game, the lmps rolled up a 39-7 score over the Lanier "B" squad from Macon. The first team scored three times in the first quarter and then retired from the game to give the reserves a chance. Recovering a Lanier fumble on the open- ing kiekoif, the lmps quickly scored on an end run by Mitchell. Shortly thereafter, Bowen eli- inaxed a 35-yard drive by plunging over. U 15 0 6-19 The Blue Devils completely outplayetl and thoroughly defeated the Albany lndians, snap- Yw-. ping an Albany winning streak of 23 games. After a scoreless first quarter, Chandler par- AUMU-CilUlN.l3fl1'kf tially blocked an Indian punt and 'liifton re- covered on the Albany 30. llere Mathis cut inside tackle and dashed all the way to a touchdown. A running play failed to make the extra point. On the first play after the kickoff, Parnell intercepted a pass on the Albany 58. Three plays put the ball on the I6. Then Bowen sneaked through guard to the promised land. This time the point was good and it was 13-0. Albany came back strong. On the first play after the kickoff, Riley passed to Lundy who outdistanced the Tifton secondary and scored. Marbtiry's at- tempt to convert was blocked by W'aldrop. Midway the third period Reynolds faked a pass and galloped 80 yards to a second Albany score. Again Marbury failed to convert, and the score was an uncomfortable I5-12 in Tifton's favor. Early in the fourth quarter a Parnell special to W'aldrop placed the ball on the Albany one-yard line. Bowen went oxer, but the point failed and Tifton led 19-12. Repeated Albany passes were broken up and there was no more scoring. The outstanding player on the field was Dick Mathis, who was playing under extreme difliculties because of a hurt foot, W'ith Mathis on the bench Tifton was gt good teamg with Mathis in the game Tifton was an inspiied team. Nlfaldrop, Rainey, and Shaw also played excellently. The game was played before the largest crowd ever to witness a game in Tifton. Bowen sneaked over twice in the first period and both times the point was good. Nlatliis sped 37 yards for the third score, and then Thomaston made one on the last play of the half. U 0 7 0-- 7 TIFTON . . 7 U 0 13-20 A sultry Thanksgiving afternoon saw an inspired Fitvgerald eleven catch the Blue Devils from the blind side and almost spoil their perfect season. Only a strong goal-line defense and a remarkable fourth quarter recovery gave the lmps :i victory. After scoring early in the first quarter on an end around by XY'aldrop, the Devils bogged down and lost their scoring punch. An inspired Hurricane eleven twice held the lmps for downs within the Fitzgerald High li-yard stripe. The Purple struck back in the third quarter. Taking the kickoff on their ZS, they drove 70 yards to the Imp five. A fourth down pass from W'arren to Mathews carried the Hurricane over. Cherry kicked the point and the score was tied 7-all. And the Hurricane was not through. After Fitzgerald had held for downs on their l7, W'arren circled end and dashed 79 yards to the Tifton four before he was caught from behind by Parnell. Tifton held for downs in a magnificent goal-line stand and took over on the three as the quarter ended. It was then that the Blue Devils turned on q, 1 I My I . 1 lnfer't'c'jiIi'J pun! . . . Words cannot express the joy we have in the realization of leaving our Alma Mater with a record of achievements: and yet words cannot express the senti- ment that we feel as we regretfully, yet with high anticipations, leave our school and companions. Graduation is here, but life is before us. Let us make the best of our opportunities, and when we have attained distinction, point proudly to our High School days-our best incentives to attain. In this, your annual and our annual, we have tried to catch a glimpse of school life, to hold for a while, the happy days which in the near future will be memories. We cannot hope that this annual will repay in tribute, all that we owe to Tifton's founders, Captain and Mrs. Tift. We are leaving behind us only a book, they have left behind them a city. Our only hope is that we can preserve the spirit and attitude that were theirs, and make this our city, a bigger and better place in which to live. Many sorrows and disappointments have been ours in producing this yearbook, but we have the satisfaction of knowing that the sorrows were not in vain and the disap- pointments brought us a little more wisdom. It is you, not we, who are to be pleased. If you, the student body, feel that this book is a part of you, then our work is well done. We lay down our pen after writing these last words-with sincere hope that this annual will always revive happy memories of High School days, we the staff, present the 1941 edition of the TALISMAN. jfs fagg 'Q 1' tr, 'ii 4. -A s...
