MATHEMATICS ... mathematics is the work horse of society. There are few days that go by that the average person does not use is mathematic ability somehow. People use mathematics in calculating the miles per gallon in their cars, the temperature outside, the amount of fuel burnt, the amount of fuel saved by the insulation they put in their walls, etc. There are few fields today that do not require some ability to do mathematics. Because of the computer age, a person who does not have some mathematical background, limits himself. Almost every phase of society uses mathematics. The person who does not want to get involved in athematics must hire someone to translate his ideas into this very precise language. This can create problems. The person who created the idea must realize that the translator will not see the idea the same way and the result will be somewhat different. In turn, this slows down the creative process. People involved in developing bridges, highways, buildings, and other developments, limit themselves from becoming the best in their field without the ability to apply mathematics to the structures they Want to create. Mathematics allows people to see ideas floating through their minds which are different from those discussed in the classroom. Applying this idea to the environment makes it relative, making mathematics a beautiful tool of life. -Doreen Hills-

SCIENCE DEPARTMENT The 1979-80 school year completes Mr. Crispin O. Butler's second year of teaching at Ticonderoga. Mr. Butler, originally from the Midwest, taught two classes of Regents Chemistry, and one class each of Regents and General Physics during this past school year. The emphasis he places on all his classes is the experience of science, during which it is essential to understand a good approach versus a bad approach, and to be able to collectively comprehend “how things work . As for his role in the student accomplishing this, Mr. Butler places supreme priority on reaching individuals and “opening their awareness to the world around them . This refers to exploration of widely varied perspectives, not just the immediate views that we all tend to adhere to. Young people, Mr. Butler feels, are most adept to this doctrine, since they are approaching decisions of major importance, and tend to be more open minded. According to Mr. Butler, success in understanding science relies on a student's creativity, clearness of thought, ability to make hidden or unseen connections, and, as already mentioned, flexibility of viewpoint. Among the tools of learning, both books and laboratory-type experience are deemed necessary. Although believing students should push themselves to obtain information from books, Mr. Butler strongly emphasizes that usually books do not adequately prove concepts in science; only a laboratory experience provides a convincing proof or disproof of an idea. When asked whether he thinks other tools such as computers and higher math will be integrated into future science courses, Mr. Butler promptly responded, “I certainly hope so. He explained that he is presently striving to do this now, even though such efforts are limited by factors such as the high demand for time on our computer during the school day. He added that he does, however, forsee more computer involvement in possible two or three years. In 15 years Mr. Butler feels that an increase in specialization is likely on the high school level. He personally feels that language study should be emphasized in the earlier grades along with a reasonable amount of diversification. The class of 1980 thanks Mr. Butler for his dedication and wishes him happiness and luck at Ticonderoga in the future. 30 -Joe Paniccia-
