David Eyres as skipper and Commander Orville Wright jr. as Executive Officer, HELANTISUBRON EIGHT contributed greatly to the ASW capabilities of ASW GROUP THREE during the 1971 WESTPAC cruise. Currently flying Sikorsky's turbine-powered SH-3D Sea King Helicopters, HS-8's primary mission of antifsubmarine warfare is to detect, track and destroy enemy sub- marines, during all Weather, around the clock operations. HS-8 was also tasked with the placement and monitoring of sony bouys when the weather was too adverse for the fix wing aircraft to launch. The squadron's secondary mission included utility operations such as personnel, mail and cargo transfers, plane guard and search and rescue operations. To carry out their mission, the men of HS-8 work together as a highly skilled team. For example, during the cruise over 1000 flight hours were recorded by HS-8. The scheduling and coordination of all flight operations are the prime responsibilities of the Operations Department. But without the co-operation of the men in AVXWEPS, Admin., Aircrew and Aircraft Divisions these successful flight hours may not have been so successful. Commanding Officer CDR T.D. Eyres CDR O.
