The squadron's 160 officers and men fly and maintain eight Sikorsky SH-3D Sea King helicopters, with a primary mission of detecting and localizing submarines. The SH-3D, a modern turbine-powered aircraft, is capable of performing its mission under day and night all-weather conditions by using sophisticated electronics and instrument systems. A dipping sonar is its primary ASW sensor. During this deployment HS-4 has played a major role in all exercises, developing new tactics for the helicopter and refining older ones. In addition' to their ASW perfor- mance, the squadron's aircraft have been employed in many utility missions. These missions range from routine plane guard, holy helo , and VIP transport missions to the delivery of thousands of pounds of mail for Tico and her escort destroyers. The squadron looks forward to further operations aboard the Pacific Fleet's finest CVS. Commanding Officer CDR W-E Aur CDR A.L.
