218 VS- Air Anti-Submarine Squadron Thirty-seven is an all-weather carrier anti-submarine squadron which is part of CVSG-59. Our mission is to detect, localize, and if necessary destroy submarines. This is accomplished through the operation of seven Grunman SZE aircraft and the professional expertise of 146 officers and men. During this cruise VS-37 has conducted ASW operations with both U.S. and foreign submarines as well as providing surface surveillance of the operating areas. The Indian Ocean exercise provided an excellent opportunity to update crew quali- fications and to learn the underwater acoustical environment. The transit through the Sea of Japan helped our co-ordination with the Japanese and our period off the Kamchatka Peninsula, USSR increased our knowledge of submarine detection in northern areas. The officers and men enjoyed good liberty in all the Far Eastern ports. Several squadron parties and stiff competition in softball and volleyball kept the group in outstanding condition.
