O8 VS-33 The primary mission of Air Anti-Submarine Squadron Thirty-Three is the detection localization, classification and, if necessary, the destruction of enemy submarines. As part of Carrier Air Anti-Submarine Group Fifty-Nine, the squadron deploys, and flys its missions from the deck of the USS Ticonderoga. The squadron consists of one hundred and fifty working and flying personnel and seven aircraft. When not deployed, the group makes its home at NAS North Island, San Diego, Calif. The Screwbirds are proud of having won the Arnold J. Isbell award for Anti- Submarine Warfare Excellence and the Pacific Fleet Battle Efficiency E , Since its commissioning in 1960, VS-33 has continued to demonstrate a high degree of professionalism in anti-submarine warfare skills through safety. '- ,.-v':- new Af' V : ,gi 4 LSO In addition to the senior LSO on the Air Group staff, each VS and VAW squadron has one pilot assigned as Landing Signal Officer and one more under training. Over a year must be spent in training first on the field and then under supervision on the LSO platform aboard ship before a pilot finally attains the coveted designation of LSO or Paddles. Working directly under CAG and the Air Officer, the controlling LSO is responsible for detecting errors by approaching aircraft, providing active assistance and ultimately cutting or waving off the aircraft when it arrives over the ramp. During our WESTPAC deployment, CVSG-59 LSO's safely controlled over a thousand day landings and approximately 500 night landings aboard Tico. These landings included three single engine landings, one at night and two involving fires at night.
