Sth The armament of Ticonderoga, aside from the aircraft and their weapons, is com- posed of four 5 38 caliber single, open gun mounts. The gunners mates of Fifth Division are responsible for this battery, and its related equipment and its maga- zines. In addition, Fifth Division controls the ships armory and consequently takes custody of and secures all small arms and small arms ammunition aboard Tico, including the various squadrons. During WESTPAC, three gun shoots were held for training purposes. ln addition, several small arms training shoots were held on the fantail. On May 31 while in the Sea of Japan, a Z1 gun salute was fired from the 40mm Saluting Battery, commemor- ating Memorial Day. While overseas many people purchased rifles for their own private use. Cn the return trip to the states the armory took custody of these rifles which added up to more than 150. X f at 'vw BOTTOM ROW L-R, SN EM. Bautista, GMG3 R.K. Pigg, GMGI TJ. sttttt, GMCS c.L. 4 FOX Fire on the uproll, a shot across her bow, Mr. Perri. Commands of a glorious past, in their time quite appropriate. Today with the advent of mach 2 fighters and 60- knot patrol boats there is much more to be taken into consideration. Hence the develop- ment of complex and elaborate firecontrol radars and computers. Within lies the realm of the firecontrolmen of Fox Division. Responsible for the operation and maintenance of Ticonderoga's firecontrol equipment and defense against sea and 'air attack. Ticonderoga participated in gunnery exercises this cruise to test the capabilities and flexibility of her firecontrol system. The men of Fox were successful in bringing down a target sleeve. Many months of training and preparation had paid off! For Ticonderoga another feather in her cap and for the men of Fox a sense of pride and accomplishment.
