41 CR All of Tico's radio communications, including those with shore stations, ships and aircraft, come under the purview of CR division. Every radio message going to or from the ship must pass through a series of electronic equipment before it reaches its destination. ln addition to controlling this equipment, CR division personnel must pre- pare every message for distribution. W The distances of communication vary according to the type of circuit used..Messages destined for a shore station are sent via teletype and sometimes passed over several 1 thousand miles without relay. On the other hand, aircraft and ship to ship communi- cations normally cover a few hundred miles, and are predominantly voice circuits. Use 1 of these voice circuits must be extended to the operational spaces of the ship. Each day, hundreds of written messages are processed and many more voice messages I are exchanged, utilizing the services of CR division. i ' i 1 I . ,.,. , ,,.., V . e , V A Y 4 r I r 1 u I i 4 i l 1 1 I l 1 1 l I p BOTTOM RO - ' . CS CS Division is responsible for all visual communications to and from the ship, includ- ing flashing light, flaghoist and semaphore. These methods of passing information are especially useful in close tactical formations and during unreps because they provide direct, highly reliable means of coordination. During the cruise, Tico's signalmen have been exposed to all types of weather and to temperatures ranging from 120 degrees in the tropics, to the near freezing level of our Bering Sea transit. They also had some unique experiences, such as exchanging flashing light messages with Russian destroyers fin Cirilicj. Although signaling equipment and procedures have not changed much over the years, these methods continue to provide an indispensable service. BOTTOM ROW L- . TJ.
