Freshmen, The Last Class Ct Spirit, eagerness to achieve and learn, and impertinence all described the Freshman class this year. With the act of entering high school came both a measure of freedom and the burden of responsibility, a shock to many former elementary school students. The freedom included the ability to choose their own classes, the extra- curricular activities they wanted to support, and the sports in which they might wish to excel. Freedom also meant a more prominent social life. However, with this freedom came the I he 80 's taken and behavior exhibited: at foot- ball games, dances, and parties. . The size of Thunderbird alone was intimidating to many incoming Freshmen, to say nothing of a faster- paced academic atmosphere. Com- ing from a much smaller school, it was difficult at first to get used to such a large school, stated Freshman Andy Hanson. As the year progressed, the transition from grade school to high school was made easier by the acquisi- tion of new friends. These, in addition to old friends helped alleviate the inevitable responsibility for actions pressures of grades, homework, and Waiting for the bus after school is a great time for freshmen to get together and talk. Freshmen Carrie Phillips, Maria Pensiero, Cori Stillson appear to be very studious, but could it be a facade? socializing. Guiding the Class of 89 during t year were: David Eagleston, Preside Colleen Forcelli, Vice-President, En Yokomichi, Treasurer, and Andr Wiles, Secretary. Class senators we Jay Clark, Jill Trombino, Allison Brov Elizabeth Berry, and Monica Willis. As the year ended, many Freshm realized that with a quarter of their hit school years behind them they we well on their way to becoming respc sible members of teams, clubs, ai other organizations. They were also T their way to academic success.

angouts Where The Chiefs Are. For local entertainment, students en- joyed a variety of activities around the valley. The traditional hangouts where students spent large portions of time were few in number and fading from the lives of today's thrill-seeking teenagers. Tommy's, one of the remaining local hangouts, was a nightclub for teenagers and the place where most of the mods gathered on Friday and Saturday nights. Admission was five dollars, and free pizza was served throughout the evening. Shows and contests were presented frequently such as the lip synch tin which people imitated their favorite bandsl and talent shows. Metro Center was still a popular point of interest, despite new cruising laws passed to relieve the weekend congestion of traffic. Golf 'N Stuff was a video palace where a good many teens con- gregated, though its popularity began to dwindle significantly with the new cruising law and a 32.00 charge for parking. There were three movie theaters that attracted a good deal of attention within the area: Metro Cinema, Metro Village, and Metro Park. The ice skating rink across from the movie theater was clustered now and then with teens, and live shows were staged there on occasion. There were plenty of stores and fast food restaurants to choose from as well. Though actual hangouts had dissipated somewhat, teenage action did not. Cruising Central Avenue con- tinued as it had for many years. Sun- day afternoons were spent by students at several different parks in the surrounding area - Roadrunner and Cortez being'two of the more popular parks. Movies presented after- noon diversions as well, Pee Wee Her- man's Big Adventure and Commando both enjoyed big box office receipts from the teen crowd. Parties were held every so often, with rock bands in the valley attracting much attention. Big name groups came in for concerts periodically throughout the year, despite the commotion over the violent Labor Day performance of the Scor- pions. Driving to the desert on Deer Valley Road and beyond was common among those with trucks and other off- road vehicles. There were a few adult nightclubs in the valley which had teen nights. Rocker's was an example of this type of establishment, with rock 'n roll bands and live entertainment. Graham's Central Station also featured a teen night every now and then. Closer to home, in the immediate Thunderbird area, many fast food and other establishments served the needs of hungry and bored teens. A favorite place for pizza, Peter Piper Pizza pro- vided the standard italian fare and video game entertainment after foot- ball games and other school functions. For dessert, students often found delicious yogurt and various toppings exactly what was needed for refresh- ment at Naturally Yogurt. Naturally Yogurt on Nineteenth Avenue and Thunderbird Road is a popular hangout for students such as seniors Monica Dorethy, Chris Watkins, and Rachele Gregory. iPhoto: J. Walkerl 5iE'iUri:.lt4 .
