Smlth a pres1ding elder of the Methodlst Ep1scopal Church He with the ald of enthuslastic citizens in Thorntown sollcited the money erected the bu1ld1ng and had it ready for occupancy by Apr1l 1855 This Academy continued untll 1868 when lt was sold to the public school quthOT1t16S and became the Thorntown High School under the school board management The Hlgh School was held in the old Academy building when e new brick bu1ld1ng replaced the wooden structure In January 1891 Thorntown H1gh School was made a C0m 1SS1On6d h1gh school Another bu1ld1ng was added 1n 18 1n order to accom odate the 70 studentsthen enrolled S1nce that tnme additions have been made in bumldings equlpment and currlculum The gymnBS1Um which was built by subscrlption as an aftermath of the annexatlon of the 1915 State Champlonshlp was a great improvement over the old gym on the thlrd floor of the grade bu1lding where the typ1ng and home economlcs rooms are now located The eff1 About s1x years ago the High School passed from a management a school board to that of the townsh1p trustee The school has been well represented 1n all school 3CtlV1t16S f the county and state both in scholastic and athletic contests 5 ' u 1 1 X !
