Souda Bay, Crete served as a surrogate home for THORN during MED 1-92. We visited the large Greek owned island sev- eral times for port visits including two repair periods with USS SIERRA CAD 185. The nearby NATO facilities and the U.S. Air Station helped make the time in Souda Bay especially fruitful. Additional- ly, trips to the port city of Hania and tours of the Cretin Mountains made the visits very interesting. - 4 - . ,. , - c,, , f s , A A On the ninth of January, THORN pulled into the port of Pireas, Greece, just south of Athens, along' the familiar sides of USS SIERRA CAD 185. Tours of ancient Greek ruins and the cosmopolitan atmosphere of Athens provided plenty of entertainment for our crew.
