ST SYR-S - ER, A local children 'S theater troop put on a street 5 play for the THORN crew. FRANCE THORN,s home for the holidays was the small riviera resort of St Syr-Sur-Mer, France. We arrived in St Syr on the twen- ty-third of December and stayed through third of January. The local population opened their homes to sailors for holiday meals and helped make the visit very pleasant. Many sailors made trips to Paris, Nice and Alpine Ski resorts. The visit was highlighted by THORN'S basketball team defeating a French University team and the Wardroom challenging a local club team to a soccer match. , X X, . Souda Bay, Crete served as a surrogate home for THORN during MED 1-92. We visited the large Greek owned island sev- eral times for port visits including two repair periods with USS SIERRA CAD 185. The nearby NATO facilities and the U.S. Air Station helped make the time in Souda Bay especially fruitful. Additional- ly, trips to the port city of Hania and tours of the Cretin Mountains made the visits very interesting.
