Histor of USS USS THORN is the 26th in a series of thirty SPRUAN CE class destroyers and is a member of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. THORN is homeported in Charleston, S.C. and is assigned to Destroyer Squadron SIX. THORN was designed and built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The USS THORN QDD 9885 is the second United States Navy destroyer to bear that name. The original USS THORN QDD 647 D was commissioned April 1 1943. Both ships were named in tribute to the memory of the late LT. Johnathon Thorn who distinguished himself in the attacks on Tripoli during the Barbary Wars. The official crest of the USS THORN is dark blue and gold colors traditionally associated with the U.S. Navy' symbolic of the sea and of excellence. The sword a symbol of nautical boldness and courage. The crossed cannons represent both the battles of the Tripolitan War and those of the first USS THORN in World War II. The orle. of mullets Cboarder of starsj refer to the seven battle stars awarded to the previous USS THORN for her service during World War II. itself against attacks by the use of its quills thus symbolizing the capabilities of USS THORN.
