Histor of USS USS THORN is the 26th in a series of thirty SPRUAN CE class destroyers and is a member of the U.S. Atlantic Fleet. THORN is homeported in Charleston, S.C. and is assigned to Destroyer Squadron SIX. THORN was designed and built by Ingalls Shipbuilding Division of Litton Industries, in Pascagoula, Mississippi. The USS THORN QDD 9885 is the second United States Navy destroyer to bear that name. The original USS THORN QDD 647 D was commissioned April 1 1943. Both ships were named in tribute to the memory of the late LT. Johnathon Thorn who distinguished himself in the attacks on Tripoli during the Barbary Wars. The official crest of the USS THORN is dark blue and gold colors traditionally associated with the U.S. Navy' symbolic of the sea and of excellence. The sword a symbol of nautical boldness and courage. The crossed cannons represent both the battles of the Tripolitan War and those of the first USS THORN in World War II. The orle. of mullets Cboarder of starsj refer to the seven battle stars awarded to the previous USS THORN for her service during World War II. itself against attacks by the use of its quills thus symbolizing the capabilities of USS THORN. Thus the Ships motto as extracted from William Shakespeares HAMLET: SHARPLY PERSEVERANT1 like the quills of the fretful porcupine. 7 7 7 7 7 The porcupine represents a creature well able to defend l 7 7 Q CC 73 Above right: THORNS keel laying Above center: THORN under construction Above: SN Eldred, Don Simpson, SN Frantz and RMSN Nalley admire a banner they designed to show the cooperation and friendship between THORN and Ingalls Right: Guests look on as Mrs. Patricia Ansley christens the USS THORN THUR CDD 9889 , ,. sr ' 5 . She has sailed back to Pascagoula twice, first for an extensive PSAXRAV program, and again for a short dry-dock period. THORNS first birthday was spent at sea during READEX 2-81, preparing for the upcoming Med Cruise. She has been a busy ship, barely getting time to rest in her homeport. She has distinguished herself among her sisters in the Spruance class. She has done more in the short time she has been in commission than most people believed possible. It takes a whole bunch of people working together as a team, to make a cruise book out of a pile of words, papers and pictures. The editors would like to thank LTJG Basile, LCDR Speer and CDR Pearsall for putting up with all the I headaches, the crew for putting up with all the put-offs, and deadlines not met and especially the following crew members for their photographic talents.
