He has given himself! His devotion and belief in this school can be felt by everyone. His responsibilities here at Thompson Academy are many: First and foremost is his position as Assistant Head- master. As Mr. Wright's advisor, he lends his Wisdom and experience to the operation of the school. As Athletic Director, Mr. Thomas is the man who instituted varsity sports as a part of Thompson's program. When he first came to the island, there were only intramurals, and the fields that the players had to use vveren't very satisfactory. Mr. Thomas is also the Industrial Arts Teacher. It was he who raised the funds to purchase the modern equipment that is in his classroom. Another of his jobs is acting as Head of Grounds. One can easily spot his love for Thompson Academy by the way he meticulously sees to it that every inch of ground on the island is taken care of properly- from supervising the raking of leaves in the fall to keeping the students off of the athletic fields when it is raining. Aside from having these many responsibilities, Mr. Thomas has also been married for thirty-five years and has seen his son through Thompson Academy. This is the kind of man to whom We dedicate our years at Thompson Academy. l 1 lalareciafion is Cjlwujea gaxfer If ever there was a "behind the scenes" man, it is Mr. Baxter. I-le spends his time quietly making business calls and buying the much needed supplies to keep Thompson Academy going. In addition to his being our purchasing agent, Mr. Baxter is also the head of buildings and the Administrative Assistant to the school. There must be something that he likes about the school because he has been here for 18 years. lt's good to have this man around. I-Ie is always there when you need him, and he is another one of a certain group of people who have helped to make Thompson Academy what it is today. For this, we would like to show our appreciation to you, Mr. Baxter. laecia jfidufe 5 ,,k.m-Mwfxdhw 3: 9- f- A M-1 ia S. am E K I ' af ' ..-A . -... A A, L gt T poderf Jcfclzing The members of the Class of I972 would like to set aside this Special Tribute in their yearbook to a very special man. Mr. Kitching has been to us, a perfect example of complete devotion-if such a thing can be put in common words. When he first came to Thompson's Island in 1928, Mr. Kitching was in charge of the poultry. For a long time his efforts provided the school with fresh eggs and meat. As the school changed and grew, the chicken farm was used mainly as a source of experience to the students of the Farm and Trade School-as the Academy was called then, Until l963, when the school was changed over to a predominantly college preparatory establishment, Mr. Kitching had hatched up 2,000 chickens annually. In his earlier years, Nlr. Kitching was a very athletic man. I-Ie was a good tennis player and he loved baseball the most. In fact, it would be quite wrong to say that he is not still quite athletic. Aside from being present at all of our home games, he is also an avid supporter of the Dartmouth Football Team. It is a rare day when he misses one of our home games. In February, l97l, he lost his home in the tragic fire that destroyed our Main Building. There have been many changes in the school since l928, but, for Mr. Kitching, this last experience was probably the most drastic. Many people have come and gone at Thompson Academy during his years here, but We hope that Mr. Kitching will remember us . . . as We all remember him . . . .gn Memoriam WM. MXL Mrie When someone who has touched the hearts of people passes on, we feel a great sadness. Mrs. Urie had made many friends, some of whom have come and gone over the past 21 years here at Thompson Academy. Although she left behind her a daughter and a grandson, we can't help but feel that vve've suffered a tremendous loss. Those of us who have Worked with her have seen a remarkably energetic woman performing her duties without any complaints or frustrations. Even more fortunate are those Whom she called friends. Mrs. Champagne, her close friend, must have been very proud to have known her. Mrs. Urie came to Thompson Academy in 1950. Along with Mrs. Champagne, she was the dining room supervisor for six years. In 1956 she became the laundry supervisor and had held that position since then. Mrs. Urie's absence will be felt for a long time to come at Thompson Academy. jnualeea CALVIN PAGE BARTLETT Chairman of the Corporation Ben Ames Williams, Jr. President George Lewis, Vice President and Assistant Secretary Henry Lyman, Vice President Bayard Henry, Vice President Bartlett Harwood, Jr. Treasurer John B. The Sea Hawks of l97l brought pride and spirit back to the gridiron of Thompson Academy. The success of this team is not truly measured by their 3 win 4 loss record. Their taste for victory had been smothered by the loss of every game last season. They had to put a lot of things together this year and make them work. They did just that. The team rolled over Blue Hills 26-6 at Homecoming, piling up 307 yards rushing and passing. In the Exeter game the Hawks rolled up 587 yeards rushing and passing for a 48 to 6 victory. Then came the Hyde game, the most exciting and also the most heartbreaking game of the season. The Hawks poured their hearts and souls into this one. They gave everything they had and more. With one touchdown called back and the loss of another in the end zone, the Hawks made 522 yards rushing to Hyde's 290 yards, but the game went to Hyde in the closing minutes of the contest-26-21. In the following game with Lawrence, the Hawks were plagued with penalties preventing them from scoring on two occasions and for the first time failed to score-O-14 loss. Marionapolis came next and the Hawks went wild, rushing for a phenominal 451 yards in a 56 to 6 romp. The last two games were rough ones. Against Tyngsboro, the Hawks suffered several strategic injuries in addition to stakes and penalties, again preventing them from scoring. At Winchendon, it was the lack of bench strength and injuries that took a great toll. The team came back strong in the second half, but time had run out for the Hawks and the game ended 52-7. 0 erwiue ilofgaf FRONT ROW: Qleft to rightj IVI. Coble, K. Williamson, G. Lee, S. Clavery, K. Shea, D. Riley, M. Stevens, E. Ross, Manager. This year's Seahawk Soccer team had an incredible season. Under the superb coaching of Mr. Donald Merry, the team's record was 7 wins, 2 losses, and 2 ties. Some of the outstanding players were Derek Smith, who was the highest scorer and won the award for "The Most Valuable Soccer Player." Kerry I-Iurley, the team's goalie, gave a performance of fantastic speed and agility which won him the award of "Best Defensive Soccer Player." Ferdinand Carengelo, who was not too far behind Derek Smith in the scoring department, was awarded "Most Improved Player". The forward line of the team consisted of Derek Smith, John Gallagher, Ulysses I-larrell, Nickolay I-lersey, and Ferdinand Carengelo. These were the players that helped to keep the team on the offensive. The half-backs were Albert Moritz, Mark Stevens, and Ruben Colon. These three players contributed greatly on both offensive and defensive playing. The full-backs of the team were Kevin Shea, Robert Freschette, and our goalie, Kerry Hurley. These players helped to keep us out on top of the scoreboard with unbelieveable defensive work. Although we were much smaller than most of our opponents, we had enough speed and desire to win-and our record proves this. Leaving us this year are two Seniors: Kerry I-lurley and Ruben Colon. We will miss these two players greatly. We always had constant support from our bench-even when we were losing, or down a point or two. We here at Thompson Academy believe that next year's Soccer Team will be just as good, or even better than this year's-mainly because so many of the Lettermen are returning next year. Uaraifg gczrfefda FRONT ROW: Qleft to rightl W. Reynolds, L. Floyd, C. Smith, J. DelValle, M. Stevens, T. Longo. SECOND ROW: Cleft to righth M. Munn, G. Scott, M. Coble, R. Dozier, M. Williams, E. Ross. This year, varsity went through a building process. Only four seniors were on the I3 man squad. With the playing time and experience gained by the underclassmen, Thompson will be "Tourney Bound" next season with the help of a big man, highlight of the season, Louie Floyd, scoring a basket at the buzzer to beat P.C.D. 55-53. The two strong showings against a much bigger St. Andrew 's Team: Chuckie Smith scoring 28 points in a winning cause against Roxbury Latin and then 36 points in a losing cause against St. Andrew's. This year's starting team featured Co-Captains Chuckie Smith and John DelValle. Center, Marvin Coble, and guards Louie Floyd and Bill Reynolds. The next three were considered starters too and contributed greatly to the team's success: Glenn Scott, Bob Dozier, and Mark Stevens. The team cou1dn't have done without the following members also: Jim Seaman, Paul Seaman, Tony Longo, Mark Williams, and Mike Munn. THOMPSON ACADEMY ST. This year hockey was besiedged by many problems. Aside from having only four seniors on the team, the group lacked the general experience that was badly needed. Being a young team, they did not have the cohesion of a veteran team. Although the season wasn 't particularly good, the team held its own. It must be admitted that this year was the beginning of a better team. If most of the players return for the next season, Thompson Academy may well be on the road to the building of a very powerful squad. Opponents--WATCH OUT! ! !!
