ADMINISTRATION AN D FACULTY ! l Y N W x e -.sq 9 SCHOOL HISTORY Education in our area has come a long way since the days of Thomas Jefferson, Statesman and Pres- ident. Our present junior-senior high is certainly a wonderful improvement over the one, two, and three room schools formerly in our district. Before the consolidation program under which our school is now operated, there were many small schools including the Wray School built in 1812, the Jones School, and the Torrence School built in Pleasant Hills by the Works Progress Administration of the Federal Gov- ernment. This program began in 1937 and did away with many small, outmoded buildings. The new Thomas Jefferson Junior High School was opened for partial occupancy on September 22, 1953. This day marked the realization of the dream for which the Board of Education, administration, teachers, pupils, and parents had long been waiting. The untiring efforts of all resulted in a fine new building with modern facilities and equipment. lt was the first step toward completing a modern, up- to-date secondary school program. The building was located on a seventeen acre plot of land, purchased from Chamberlain and Pierce, and was designed to be functional, modern, and convenient. The final step in the making of an up-to-date secondary program was taken on September 2, 1958. The opening of the new senior high marked an outstanding achievement in the cultural history of the West Jefferson Hills School District. The citizens who had high aspirations for a modern educational sys- tem made it possible to complete this last addition. The present senior high building, adjoining the junior high, offers a beautiful view of the surround- ing country for six miles. lt has been designed for a modern approach to education and facilities have been provided so that this objective may be accom- plished. Combined with the junior high, thirty-three rooms are available for the teaching of English, foreign languages, social studies, mathematics, and science. Each of the five science rooms has an effective laboratory with instructional areas plus individual student experiment tables. The Business Education Department is comprised of two typing rooms, one of which is partially equip- ped with electric typewriters. The office practice room is designed and equipped to provide many various office experiences. These rooms are able to supply the commercial student with the practical experiences he or she may find valuable in future years. The Industrial Art Education Department, locat- ed on the lower floor, includes wood, electric, metal, and machine shops, a drawing room and a general shop for junior high school use. The Home Economics Department consists of a foods laboratory, homemaking suite, and clothing laboratory. The gymnasium provides facilities for a com- prehensive health, physical education, and recreation program. Conveniently located, the library will accommo- date eighty students in the main reading room. There are two conference rooms, one storage room, a work room and librarians' office. A modern, well-equipped cafeteria can serve six hundred pupils during each period. The educational program extends beyond the classroom into the auditorium and community rooms. The auditorium seats seven hundred, seventy-four people, and has ample dressing and storage rooms for school and community dramatic and musical pro- ductions. The Community Room has a stage and a seating capacity of two hundred, fifty. lt is a most useful room for instruction, student activities and small community functions. The athletic field provides areas for football, baseball, track and softball. Present seating ar- rangements for spectators approximates 2,500 and there is parking area for about 500 cars. The citizens of West Jefferson Hills can be proud of this accomplishment. Modern education requires a physical plant which will facilitate learning pro- cesses and take care of individual differences in each student, who will one day take his place as a responsible citizens in our democracy. Thomas Jef- ferson High School is fully prepared to accept this responsibility. lt can truly serve as the mentor of the youth of West Jefferson Hills. For many of these boys, this was the first attempt at track sports and this presented a tremendous challenge to them and to Mr. Basch. All track events, including discus throw- ing, low and high hurdles, distance running, etc., were re- presented by our first senior high squad in their meets. Teams from Donora, Turtle Creek, Baldwin, Mt. Lebanon, and Brentwood High Schools were opponents. Lack of experience kept the team from winning any meets, but a few individual performances stood out in these losses. Jack Watkins earned a first place in iavelin, Bob Gecan, second in the mile run, and Ed Weiss pole vaulted 9'6" for second place honors. We can look forward in coming years to top track teams which will bring many honors to Thomas Jefferson High School. s...,-.'51 X .K 1x.ezf.5 mai? Their Holly Hop was a huge success as were their other activities such as the Junior High Talent Show, the Junior High Pep Assemblies, the Valentine Dance, and the Ninth Grade Picnic. The purpose of this Student Council was to establish the qualities of leadership, to give students an opportunity to work closely with the administration, to plan student ac- tivities, and to serve the school in general. The only word that can adequately describe the magnificent presentation of The Diary of Anne Frank by Thomas Jefferson's first Senior Class. Under the direction of Mrs. Jane B. Smith, the cast was able to convey the compassionate feel- ings of a young Jewish girl. The scene was set in Amsterdam. Holland, during World War Il when the Jews were being persecuted. Forced to hide for three years in the attic of an old warehouse, Anne gives encouragement and hope to those around her. The story portrayed the racial prejudices of the time and the stress and anxiety of war. The cast consisted of ten players, the most uni- que member being Mouschi, Peter's beloved cat. The long and strenuous efforts of the cast proved worth- while when the play was presented on December 'IO and 12. There was a two-story set built under the direction of Mr. George Gieske, Technical Director. Other behind-the-scene committees also worked for the success of the play. Powerful and dynamic, The Dairy of Anne Frank was highly praised for many weeks thereafter. One of the most dramatic scenes of the play is portrayed when Mrs. Frank comforts Anne as Mr. Frank looks for the dreaded Nazi police. 49 Very important in the production were the behind-the-scene hands of the Make-up Committee. vis, if-A-f--. Approximately 250 guests enjoyed the delicious dinner prepared by the Mothers. Judge Samuel Weiss served as Master of Ceremonies, and Vic Fusia, assistant football coach at Pitt, was the main speaker of the evening. Mike Ditka and Don Kraus of the Pitt Football squad were also present to lend a few comments. Our own Coach Connors made a few brief remarks, and the co-captains of this year's squad, Tony Canterna and Dom Castagna, expressed their appreciation to the coaches for their aid and support. John Engel- mohr, Senior Class President, made some additional remarks. A fitting climax to the evening came when the Mothers Club presented each member of the foot- ball team with an individual caricature done by Bob Beech, a local artist and avid booster of the team.
