26 Knights rebuild for a district championship With few lettermen returning to the lineup, the Knights rebuilt a powerful football team to win the first Central District Championship in the history of Thomas Dale. The offensive team averaged 25.6 points per game while defense allowed a mere 8.7 points a game in regular season play. Against district opponents the Knights compiled a perfect 8-0 record. Advancing to the regional playoffs, the Knights were defeated 20-8 by Henrico to finish 9-2 for the year. HUGUENOT-THOMAS DALE Scoring two touchdowns each, Doug Harris and Steve Noe led the Knights to a 26-6 opening victory over Huguenot. Harris scored on a 70 yard run on the first play from scrimmage. The offense sustained Noe on a one-yard sneak for six more points. Two long yardage drives and two one point conversions piled on the final Dalian tallies. HERMITAGE-THOMAS DALE Tallying the highest score against the Knights since they entered the Central District, the Hermitage Panthers crushed Thomas Dale in a 38-0 decision. Led by their halfback and quarterback, Hermitage scored in all but the first quarter. Thomas Dale’s deepest penetration was to the Panther 25. PETERSBURG-THOMAS DALE Thomas Dale capitalized on three Wave fumbles to upset heavily favored Petersburg 7-0. Barron Cheatham led rushing with 64 yards. The only score came in the fourth quarter with Steve Noe going in on a sneak. Tough Knight defense held Petersburg scoreless.
