A Year of Participation The student council year 1975-76 marked a year of participation. Presi- dent Susan Ferrer urged the students to get involved and unite behind Howe, and so they did as several committees offered the entire student body projects of participation throughout the year. Lack of homerooms proved to be the biggest problem for the council as communication to students was se- verely hampered. Election of freshman members was handled differently from the past. An at-large election was held in the cafeteria, making future coun- cils strictly voluntary. Besides having the traditional dances, sock hops, and the Senior- Faculty basketball game, the student council sold personalized Bicentennial stickers. Projects created to involve everyone were the main goal this year. Among these projects were an Envi- ronmental Awareness Week which in- cluded painting trash cans, showing ecology films during study halls, and a Walk for the Environment in the sur- rounding Irvington area. A Bi- centennial mural contest was held for students who wanted to design an American history mural. A Stay in School program was developed for the potential drop-out. Student council ended its thirty- eighth year at Howe on a very positive note with a more involved student body. Once again the council proved to be a training ground for potential leaders.
