1976 Hilltopper Thomas Carr Howe High School Indianapolis, Indiana Volume 35 Traditions 2 Fall 7 Winter 35 Spring 61 Summer 83 Academics Portraits Afterview Index Tna : ' , ' • ' iMll4 ' Traditions Construction and Change Traditions change from time to time just like the seasons change from year to year. Since Thomas Carr Howe High School was opened in the fall of 1938, many traditions have been established and many have been changed. From 450 students and a one-wing building to an enrollment of 2,400 and a struc- ture now consisting of four additions, Howe has come a long way from its original intentions. Violet Queen, Violet Hill, the Brown and Gold, and the Turnabout all have been traditions at Howe. Some are lost and the ones that still remain are very much changed because of time. Homeroom is no longer a part of a stu- dent ' s life. The Spring Pageant was erased because of the construction of the stadium. Many student activities have been lost because of apathy and expansion. This was a special year for the coun- try and the community, however— it was a year of history and celebration and a time to look into our own begin- ning. With many old activities brought to life and some new ones established, another year is folded into the past and plans to move on are underway. A. Continued growth has marked Howe ' s history. B. Traditional vespers in the old gym. C. The modern side of Howe. D. Howe as seen in 1964, prior to the construc- tion of the football stadium. E. Fall of 75 )• - — 1- • -c. -s Homecoming WelE But Still a Tradition Homecoming, a tradition un- changed throughout its lifetime. From the very first football team at Howe, in 1943, the fall football and float extravaganza has been the high point of many eastsiders ' frosty autumn nights. The 1975 homecoming was the same in following tradition but will be remembered longer for its weather. Wading through mud and rain, the queen candidates and their escorts struggled to remain intact on the field during halftime. The floats, perhaps the best seen at Howe in a long time, were a little soggy but none the worse for wear. For the first time that anyone can re- call, the band and drill team were unable to march because of freez- ing rain and windy weather. With the crowd scattered in huddles, and those who were there bundled un- der blankets, the cheerleaders de- terminedly cheered the players on. The Howe team held Scecina score- less most of the game, only to lose in the final moments. A. Varsity and reserve cheerleaders lead the fans in the traditional anthem. B. Struggling with wind, rain, and mud 1975 home- coming queen Diane Abney and her escort, Wayne Munchel, await crowning. C. Bright raincoats and umbrellas protect a spirited crowd on a dismal night. D. Co-captain Gary Pottorff huddles with the coaching staff during a break in the close game. E. The junior float, with the theme of a bakery, rolls on down the track to show the crowd the juniors ' work and spirit. F. Long hours and hard work paid off as the German Club float became the first club entry to win the float competition in a long time. G. Laura Schlebecker and Griff Reed work on the soph- omore float during the sleepless week before the homecoming. H. Jersey day, one of three special days during home- coming week, is honored by Mr. Glenn Rohde, head of the math department. Dances, the Best of Memories A dance, one of the most important events of the year! It ' s expensive for all involved, but it ' s worth it. Of all the memories, the dances are the ones that stand out most. The girls in their dresses, the guys in their tuxes, having a good time. The 1975 Turnabout, sponsored by the Hilltopper, was a big success. The Howe dance band played for the Turn- about. Since 1945 this has been held as the traditional girl-ask-guy dance, replacing the outdated May dance which was held outside. The Brown and Gold was the first formal dance of the ' 75- ' 76 year at Howe. Everyone enjoyed themselves with the music and the company. The Sounds of Light Touch, chosen to play because of their popularity at the ju- nior prom, were the best band at a Howe dance in a long time. The dance will be remembered by many people as one of the best dances we have had. And then, for those who couldn ' t af- ford formal dances, there were the sock hops that yielded the fun without the high cost of a formal dance. Many people attended them and had a dynomite time. A. Student Council president Susan Ferrer and Hilltopper associate editor Glen Marquis plant the traditional kiss on Brown Boy Mark McClure and Golden Girl Laura Tuttle. The Brown and Gold has been held annually since 1940. B. Formal pictures are a dance tradition. Couples wait their turn at the 1975 Brown and Gold. C. Sock hops provide after-game fun. D. Mary Weatherwax and Richard White dance freely in their formal dress at the 1975 junior prom. E. Turnabout king and queen were Mike Taylor and Debbie Williamson, crowned by Hilltopper staffers Janice Wiggins and Phil Stalas. F. While others were trick-or-treating, Julie O ' Haver and Ann Hudson were bumping at the traditional after-game sock hop. G. Enjoying each other ' s company, Debbie Har- vey and Doug Peters take a break from dancing at the Turnabout. ! 10 11 Clubs Make Comeback Clubs made a comeback of sorts at Howe this year. The German Club, sponsored by Mr. Kindle, became the first club in recent years to win the homecoming float competition. A membership of sixty worked on vari- ous projects in order to send a student to Germany for the summer. Smaller clubs continued active for students of French and Spanish. The History Club centered its activities on the Bi- centennial. The quiz team, despite in- experience, continued a winning tradi- tion. The chess team challenged strong competition as always. Ebony Unlimited, with a larger membership, met informally with Mrs. Neal and Mrs. White throughout the year. 12 hnSa -A A. History Club. Front: C. Bredensteiner, D. McKain, C. Fisher, D. Snyder, P. The 1975-76 Tower was directed by editor-in-chief Mark Gibson, managing editor Nanette Walters, and associate editor John Starneri. Mrs. Jeannie Martin sponsored the paper. The goal of the staff was to publish a paper that covered the issues of con- cern to the students, listening to the student body and answering their questions. Several changes were made because of new financing meth- ods. The paper was funded by the school and distributed to all Howe stu- dents and faculty. It was printed by students in the Howe print shop. Many of the staff personnel attended one-week summer workshops at Ball State University, giving them the expe- rience and skills needed to put out the issue regularly and to meet the needs of the student body. Presi- dent Susan Ferrer urged the students to get involved and unite behind Howe, and so they did as several committees offered the entire student body projects of participation throughout the year. Lack of homerooms proved to be the biggest problem for the council as communication to students was se- verely hampered. Election of freshman members was handled differently from the past. An at-large election was held in the cafeteria, making future coun- cils strictly voluntary. Besides having the traditional dances, sock hops, and the Senior- Faculty basketball game, the student council sold personalized Bicentennial stickers. Projects created to involve everyone were the main goal this year. Among these projects were an Envi- ronmental Awareness Week which in- cluded painting trash cans, showing ecology films during study halls, and a Walk for the Environment in the sur- rounding Irvington area. A Bi- centennial mural contest was held for students who wanted to design an American history mural. A Stay in School program was developed for the potential drop-out. Student council ended its thirty- eighth year at Howe on a very positive note with a more involved student body. Once again the council proved to be a training ground for potential leaders. A. Vice-president Kim Campbell takes her turn in the new student council office. B. Andria Alexander counts money and looks over the records for the Brown and Gold. C. Parking permits, part of council ' s job, are reg- istered by Mike Wadsworth and Brenda Cohee. D. Susan Ferrer urges the student body to par- ticipate during the annual assembly. E. Painting trash cans, Carol Shelley and Tammy Lannom do their part for the environment. F. The communication committee, perhaps one of the busiest during the fall, makes a poster to advertise the Bicentennial stickers. G. Joe Smith reads off answers to a North Cen- tral Association survey, just one of the many jobs council undertakes. 17 A Year Of Action A. Billye McGrory and the Communications Com- mittee put up window to tell about Council ' s projects. B. Entertaining at the Home for the Aged has be- come a tradition in Council. C. The Environmental Walk, part of Council ' s get involved program, helped to clean up Irvington. F. Part of the Student Council ' s job is to promote spirit in the students. This was part of a Home- coming pep rally. 19 The Skin of Our Teeth The senior play, Thornton Wilder ' s The Skin of Our Teeth, was an unusual play for a senior class to perform. It concerns the survival of man from the beginning up to and through the wars. Certain traditions set by former se- nior plays were followed this year by the members of the cast. Mrs. Hariette Baker, who has directed the play since 1970, had the same problem as in past years of finding a time when all cast members could be at a practice at the same time. This problem did not keep the play from being well acted and a big success for the senior class. A. Sabina gets some helpful hints on how to snare Mr. Antrobus from the frivolous fortune teller, Nanette Walters. B. They are not to survive, but they ' re enjoying themselves. C. Miss Sabina Fairweather (Kim Burden) has her own methods of survival. D. A very sad time for all, the planets are sick. E. Enjoy yourselves! With the help these people have provided, the athletes and coaches are left with the valuable practice time they need. Fire-Up for Victory! This is the cheerleaders ' motto. Getting the student body involved actively at school sport functions ranks as one of the most important goals for our cheerleaders. Long hours of prepa- ration go into their work. In addition to afternoon practices many of the girls attend summer camps, varsity at the University of Kentucky and re- serve at Ball State. Mr. Samuel Kelley, now retired, issued uni- forms to about 70 men who broke into four intramural teams. And that is how football became a part of Howe life. In September of 1975 tradition was carried on as Coach Stewart selected his varsity squad for the season. Rush- ing was a big factor this year with ju- nior James Fair breaking the all-time Howe record and the team gaining an impressive 2,191 yards. Ray Littleton and Don Hughett both had good pass- ing records and the defensive line-up produced one of the best tackling records at Howe. To the fans the year could be summed up as a season of hard won battles and close defeats with the completed record of 6-4. iSi ¥ ff o g 50 A. Ray Littleton laterals to James Fair. B. Will Be Winners A result of too many trying out and a need for basic training in prospective varsity players, the reserve football team was formed. If this season was any indication of varsity squads to come, then Howe is in for many more winning seasons in football. The reserve squad ended the year with an 8-2 record, placing them second in the city. Perhaps not show- ing the experience of a varsity team or demonstrating perfect execution all the time, the junior varsity team did make the games exciting with unex- pected come-back victories. This year ' s beginning football team showed the potential to be winners for Howe in coming seasons. Though the freshmen lacked experience and unity in the beginning, towards the end im- provement came through and they ended their season with a 1-8-1 record. The coaching staff and fans felt that in the next four years the players will be winners. m A. Richard Bruce tears through the spirit sign before the Marshall game. B. The varsity record was 7-4 and reserve was 4-6. The season got off to a slow start but toward the end the girls really im- proved and showed their true abilities, which led them to competition in sec- tional semi-finals. The level of ability throughout the state has improved so much over the last few years that Coach McMillan felt sure that this team could have won at least sectionals three or four years ago. Seniors dominated the varsity squad. The MVP award was given to Carol McCrae, and the Best Mental At- titude award was received by Laurel Lagenaur. With a new coach, Tim Jes- sup, and a young team, they produced a 12-10 record and placed sixth of 18 in the city race. The freshman squad ended their first season with a 13-2 record and placed a close second in the city meet. With nine returning members, talented freshmen, and hard practices the girls succeeded in break- ing records in 13 different events. They also broke their two year losing streak with three wins and eight losses. Freshman Carolyn Hughett, most valuable swimmer, placed fifth in sec- tional finals and both the medley relay and the 400 freestyle relay teams re- turned for sectional consolations. Se- nior Janice Wiggins was voted best mental attitude to end the season. With a young team and a new coach, Jody Hancock, the team continued the tradition with hard practices and lots of team spirit. This year was essen- tially a rebuilding year for the team be- cause there were only three returning lettermen, but the squad showed a fine season by winning 11 matches in a row. Winter of 75-76 • ) ;i ' « i . ; 35 m Tradition a Keynote The music department this year has undergone a few changes. First of all, Mr. Tom Lewis is the new department head. Second, the Boy ' s Octet and the Girl ' s Ensemble have combined to form a new group called the Swing Choir, under the direction of Mr. Lewis. They perform at school functions and outside social occasions, singing re- cent songs. One of the more traditional musical groups at Howe is the Madrigal Sing- ers, under the direction of Mr. Robert Bramblett. They meet during the ninth period, as do the Swing Choir. The Madrigals also perform at school pro- grams, but they specialize in medieval madrigal feasts, which are given dur- ing the Christmas season at commu- nity churches. Their numbers usually consist of older tunes which coincide with their feasts. The Choir also has been a long standing tradition here at Howe. It is directed by Mr. Lewis. The Choir has performed for such occasions as Christmas on the Circle, the Irvington Community Sing, featuring all of the music department, and the Christmas assembly for Howe ' s student body. Many of the members of the choir sing in the other music groups such as the Swing Choir, Madrigals, and Boy ' s Chorus and Girl ' s Concert Club. Indi- vidual members participate in All-City and All-State Choirs. But the main event for them is the musical which is given in March. 36 A. Girls Concert Club. Row 1: N. Faubion, P. Jones, D. The band marched at the 500 Fes- tival Parade, the 500 Race and the Vet- erans Day Parade. This year the band entered the state contest for the first time since Mr. Mahler ' s arrival. Sixteen members of the band went to All-City. Five of them received first chair position. The sixty member orchestra played at the Pops Concert, Christmas pro- gram, Spring Concert and musical. They performed at different places in the community during the holiday sea- son. String Ensemble had perfor- mances at churches and community functions all through the year. The En- semble was. made up of the top 15 string players in the music department. Howe sent 25 members to the All-City Orchestra, the largest number from any school in the city. A. Tradition was broken this year when the Honeys were unable to march at the football homecoming game be- cause of bad weather. The Honeys were able to march at all other home football and basketball games though. Captain Carrie Shepard along with co-captain Becky Smith made this a year of new and exciting dances. They used such steps as the bump and the robot. Sixteen of the Hornet Honeys made up an honor team known as the mili- tary squad. This squad, led by captain Sue Heustis and co-captain Jenny McCormick, marched at all military meets with the ROTC units. Dance On In Tradition HKSShH B . ' S r J 1 1 ! The Honeys sit together to cheer on the Hornet basketball team 45 Varsity Hits Open Man Basketball was one of the first sports engaged in at Howe, both intramurally and interscholastically. Though no state champs have been produced, the team has always been one of the best at Howe. This year ' s team, with their season coming to a close, was the best team the Hornets have had in a while. The varsity ' s biggest problem was their lack of size. But the team ' s ability to hit the open man made up for their minuses. The reserve basketball team over- came a big hurdle of inexperience to capture the city title. The reserves en- tered tourney competition with a record of 10-1 , losing only to Tech by 2 points. Coming out of tourney play the reserves held the city title after defeat- ing Wood in the final game. A hard-working freshman squad with the never-die attitude began their bas- ketball career with a lot of hard work and a strong effort despite a losing season because of inexperience. They were up against such weaknesses as a lack of shooting ability and fundamen- tals. According to coach Smith, the best game of the season was against the 12-0 Washington team. Girls Boast Winning Tradition Not many teams at Howe can boast a record like the girls gymnastics team. A three-year state finalist banner hangs in the gym and the girls hope to add a winner. Coach Reinhardt commented that this year was tougher than the last two, but the girls looked forward to hosting and competing in sectionals here this year. Coach Hewitt came from Pike High School, where he received the title of Boys Gymnastics Coach of the Year in 1975. As usual starting a new team was tough but it proved to be promising. There were no team wins in the first year record but individual winners shone through in several events. Lack of experience on the equipment hin- dered the young team but determina- tion and enthusiasm helped to make the first year team exciting. Hornet backers may be assured of another competitive sport in the next few seasons. A. Boys Gymnastics. Front: R. Vanat, S. Yam- afugi, M. Sgro, M. Storm, L. Allison. Back: R. Lovell, R. Hensley, C. Improvement Doubles The boys swimming team with nine returning members has definitely im- proved in the last two years. Starting with Mike Goetz as their coach and changing mid-season to Tim Jessup, organizer and coach of the swimming program at Howe, the boys doubled their wins from the past years. The team had much more depth this year and included many seconds, thirds, and fourths, along with the first places. This year the team had many exciting wins but the highlights of the season were winning the city meet with eight members placing and hosting the school ' s first sectional. Sophomore Matt Langenbacher quali- fied for the semi-state. Coach Jim Ar- vin said that the team ' s strengths were a tremendous self-dedication and team unity. The only problem was that the coaches had to cut many talented boys from the popular program. Although the reserve wrestling squad could not finish with another 1 0- record, they did have an impressive season. An excellent freshman team, usually at a disadvantage because of lack of experience, proved that the Howe wrestling program may look forward to many more exciting seasons like this year ' s 6-2. A. It proved to be a very popular sport, attracting nearly eighty girls to tryouts. Twenty-five girls were chosen to play on the varsity and reserve squads. Howe was at a disadvantage, being the only new basketball team in the city, but head coach Bob Mitchell overcame this handicap with hard practice. He summed up the teams ' at- titude by saying, The enthusiasm is super. Reserve coach Rita Gaither added, In spite of many losses, the girls still have great spirit. Spring of 76 -J - ' M- - ■- — . - r - • 61 A Different Tune This year ' s musical was quite differ- ent from musicals in the past, not only because four performances were given but also because Li ' l Abner is not the traditional, flowery, glamorous, romantic production of by-gone days. Instead of being set in far-off lands or the bright lights of a big city, it is set in a small, unnecessary hick town known as Dogpatch, USA. The musical was the highlight of the music season and the big performance for many senior cast members. This year ' s musical, like musicals of before, was a big production and a success. 62 A. From double period as- semblies to double-night musicals, the stage crew serves an important purpose. The sound crew handles all sports and theatrical sound equipment while the business managers sell admission tickets at all Howe events. Students who put in the required amount of time may be initiated into Thespians honorary. Sit 1 1 £w A IL ' jSE m M I IF It f i 1 1 1 1 1  66 6 ' T Leadership in Practice Reserve Officers Training Corps (ROTC) was established for boys at Howe in 1954. In 1973, only two years ago, a program for girls was added. Instruction in leadership is the most important goal. ROTC tries to give the student a chance to instruct others and to learn the good and the bad of having people in his command. Stu- dents are also taught the basic military skills. This was the second year the boys drill team have had their new uniforms, which may only be worn in exhibition drill meets. The regular ROTC uni- forms are worn for straight drill. The girls drill team has not obtained enough money for special uniforms yet. They cleaned up the gym after sports events (with a lot of help from other ROTC members) to earn money for uniforms. They hope to have them for next year. The Color Guard did a good job of presenting the colors at sports events. The Rifle Team showed competitive skill at the rifle meets. First Sgt. Harold M. Ecktman, SAI (Senior Army Instructor), has been here for eight years. His assistant for several years has been M Sgt. Jerome Baker. The Battalion Commander at Howe was Cdt. Lt. Col. Matthew T. Orth. BATTALION COWVIAf© POST 70 Highlight Is Final Game The Hornet baseball team has come a long way from a 7-5 season back in 1948 to a 16-11 record in 1975. The team was a well balanced junior-senior group with a lot of returning players. The ' 75 season was one of improve- ments as the team improved both the batting averages and the individual records. Their leading batter was Mike Taylor. According to Mr. Preston, the team ' s batting average was extremely high for a team average. The freshman team had a record of 11 wins and 3 losses with Bruce Sha- diow having the highest batting aver- age. In 1975 the golf team held no titles but placed well in all the matches and ended the season with a 14-2 record. Guiding the team as captain was Doug Cotter, the squad ' s long ball hit- ter. Senior John Sullivan was voted most valuable player and proved his value with his coolness on the fair- ways. Although only seven men may play on the varsity squad, the junior varsity proved that not all the talent lies in the upper ranks. Coach Phil Brown took the team to sectionals and regionals. Co-captain Gary Selke broke the 100 and 220 dash records. Co-captain Roger Wright capped his career by smashing the old two-mile record with a time of 9:28.5. He won the city title and placed 13th in the state. The mile relay team ran 3:26.3 and Greg Mathias whirled the discus 158 ' 9 to set Howe records. Outstanding freshman was Abe Moore, who set records in the 1 00 and 220. Other freshman records were set in the low hurdles, discus, long jump, and 880 relay. The varsity won 9 of their 12 meets and placed a fine 5th in the city and 8th in the sectional. The mens track team will suffer a great loss next year with the retirement of Mr. Wood. He commented on his seven years at Howe, Coaching is really the only way you can reach these kids, and that ' s the thing I ' m really going to miss. A. Releasing tension before a meet, the team tosses Kathy Powers with a blanket. B. John Adams anchors another mile relay win for Howe ' s record-breaking team. C. Greg Mathias winds up before releasing a win- ning throw. D. Gary Selke breaks the tape first in the 220 with teammate Dave Detamore coming in a close third. E. Girls Track. Row 1: B. Cohee, K. New Dimensions With only three years of experience in their favor the womens track team did exceptionally well for such a young team. During the 1975 season the team and three-year coach Nancy McMillan sent seven girls to sectionals and one to state. Pilar Ammons, voted most valuable member, placed seventh in the state finals. The 880 relay team, hurdler, long jumper, milers and 100- yard sprinter all participated in sec- tionals. Three-year veteran Carol McCrae received the best mental atti- tude award. A new dimension of the season was a new assistant coach, Paul Miller. A. Kathy Powers, Bonnie Bingle, and Nancy Hinch begin the 880-run, a strenuous event. B. Carol McCrae clears the hurdles and digs in for the finish. C. High jumper Lenny Primm was Howe ' s high- est placer in the city meet. D. Two intramural sports still live on, bowling and basketball. The bowling intramural program is fairly new since it started in 1970. There were 28 teams and approximately 250 people partici- pating in the program. The basketball intramural program consisted of 11 freshman-sophomore teams and 13 junior-senior teams. The highlight of the year was the cham- pionship game between the two leagues before the senior-faculty game. A. Intramurals provide fun for participants. B. Howe bowlers crowd the lanes on Monday afternoon. C. Many Howe bowlers show fine form. M«O0f CO CD E E CO 83 Career Programs Grow This was a relatively good year for Howe students. The media center sparked a new interest in reading. It has excellent audio-visual materials, and the pleasant surroundings provide students with a welcome relief from study hall. The career center was also new this year. Students can go there for coun- seling on the area of work they would like to enter after graduation. Howe has long been known for aca- demic achievement, and there is proof in the large number of students in the National Honor Society. However, the number of students going on to col- lege has declined over the past ten years. Many are attending technical and business schools instead. There has been quite a change in several departments in the last dec- ade. The Industrial Arts Department has received the most improvements. It has added new areas and improved all its labs with new equipment and machines. Graphic arts has obtained a new lab. Also, the department has added new courses to its already wide selection of classes. Among them are electronics, prevocational education, and power and auto mechanics. Howe has changed to include classes that students used to have to take at other schools and to combine new techniques with a long estab- lished academic system. A. Business machine students calculate problems. B. Diane Zimmerman and Jenny Freeman find that some things have to be sewn by hand. C. Senior Richard Emmelman is one of the many who took advantage of the newly offered elec- tronics class. D. Anthony Suggs works on the lathe in ad- vanced machine shop. E. A dislocated elbow hinders typing student Georgia Solberg. F. Freshman Ken Kincy takes the much-dreaded but necessary spelling final. G. Paul Rettig mixes sand for the foundry unit. 84 Classes Add Variety A. Mark Collins conducts a chemistry experiment. B. Climbing the ropes is just one ot the things boys get graded on in gym. C Donna Pottorft examines the pottery at Con- nor Prairie Farms. D. A foods student makes cookies for the annual home ec fashion show. E. Students enjoy Mr. Vollmer ' s popular English classes. F. Mrs. Hancock instructs her French students in the lab. G. Boys debate who ' s going to be head cook in a men ' s foods class. H. Mr. Johnson explains the operation of a brake drum to his power mechanics class. S Students Bring Howe Honors BHH h A. A boys P.E. class gets involved in a volleyball game. B. English 4G students do a commercial for footie pajamas as a project for propaganda and advertising. C. National Honor Society. Slave Quarters, Mental Ward, The Zoo. Call it what you will but the 1975- 76 staff has done a fantastic job for such a young group. I felt that no cap- tions and very little copy were needed for the Hilltopper page. The pictures tell the story and the workers know how it was. Jokes and fun times were part of it but late night sessions and Saturday work days were also part of our job. I would like to thank my staff for all their dedication and everyone else for their cooperation. Good luck next year and the years to come. Ja- nice Wiggins, Editor. There werea new administration, a new English curricu- lum, the elimination of some classes and the addition of a lot of electives. The removal of homeroom caused a lack of communication and a rumble of dislike through some. A change in stu- dent council helped to open the chan- nels but still many activities were dropped. The Brown and Gold, the Turnabout, and the proms still remained but what ever happened to the Winter Wonder- land Dance, the Sweetheart Dance, and the May Pageant? All of those were once a part of Howe but seem to have been lost in the shuffle of our growth. Memories of when our football team was 9-0 and lost the chance to com- pete in regionals to Washington on a cold and rainy fall night, and the two years that the gym team went to state and took runner-up positions, all flood back when looking at our sports pro- gram. Women ' s sports have taken a big leap while the seniors have been here, with the beginning of three new sports. The completion of the new gym topped our stay at Howe and added the advantage of having city and sec- tional events played here in many sports. Changes came so fast in the last four years that a lot of things have been lost but the seniors came through and managed to leave Howe with some new trends and once again the feeling of accomplishment. i Diana Abney Diane Adams Jeri Adams Susan Adams Marcia Alexander Betty Allen Paul Allison Roy Allison Pam Amonette William Anderson Tracy Arthur Bill Attebury Elizabeth Back Diana Baker Gail Balch Jacqueline Ballard Joe Banayote Michael Barber Garland Barger Brian Barnes 121 Spirit of 76 Charles Bartley Teresa Bartley Mark Barton Belinda Bass Brent Bastin Richard Baue Jim Baughman Danita Beckman York Begeman Thomas Berry Mary Billerman Bonnie Bingle Karen Blanchard Carl Boger Terry Boltz Ronald Bone Karen Boring Anita Bowman Debra Branham Kris Branham 122 Carl Bredensteiner Edward Brewer Steve Brothers David Brown Denola Brown Kim Burden John Burris Pam Burton Cathy Butler Leonna Byers Russell Byrd Gary Caddell Shirley Callaway Richard Calvert Bill Cameron Kim Campbell Shirley Campbell Dennis Carr Mark Caudill Mark Cauley 123 No Homeroom Matthew Cauley Robert Cavanaugh Sharon Chafins Debra Chaillaux Betty Cheatham Glenn Cherry Cindy Clark Leo Cleme nts Theresa Cobb Brenda Cohee Teresa Cole David Conway Rod Cooley Terri Cope Kathy Craig Kimberly Cranfill Tom Cridlin Sherri Danford Andy David Greg Davis 124 Little Organization Linda Davis Marilyn Davis Mark Davis Connie DeLorraine Mary Demaster Pam Denney Donald Dichmann Robyn Dickerscheid Debra Diederichsen Donald Dilley Charlene Dishon William Dixon Jeff Donahue Mike Doody Terry Dorris Debra Dowling Fayrene Droke Robert Drum Steve Dunbar Linda Dungan 125 Seniors Kathy Dunn Adrienne Durham Marianne Dych David Edy Ernest Eickelberg Dixie Ellis Susie Elsey Karen Emery Richard Emmelman Susan Ferrer Konstantina Filis Jacquelyn Finch Kathy Fleetwood Jacquelyn Fleming Thomas Flynn Michael Ford Ronald Fowler Phil Galligan Vickie Garard Debra Gardner 126 Big Shots Bill Gearlds Louise Gearns Mark Gibson Tim Gibson Jeff Gildea Mark Gillespie Paul Gilliam Diana Gilson Robert Goddard Donna Godwin Gail Godwin Kris Goff Julie Grammer Tim Griffin John G ' Sell Joe Gutierrez Susan Hair Rebecca Hansbrough Carol Hardman Bill Hardy 127 The Last Year ' s the Best Mark Harmon Chandy Harold Michelle Harper Robert Harris Susie Hartill Debra Hartley Debbie Harvey Debbie Harvey Michael Harvey Kevin Hege Carol Hempfling Debra Hensley Sherrill Henson David Herzberg Suellyn Heustis Mary Hickman Tim Higgins Dennis Hill Lori Hill Tammy Hilligoss 128 Jon Hodge Susan Holdren Jim Holly Debra Holman Deana Hopkins Doug Hubbard Jay Hudson Kathleen Hudson Kim Hudson Shelley Huffman Edward Humphrey Sue Humphrey Dr. Patricia Alexander, Assistant Superin- tendent of Schools and former Howe dean, addresses National Honor Society initiation. 129 Senioritis Vonda Hurst Dennis Hynds Scott Irvin Teresa Jeffries Gail Johnson Kevin Johnson Peggy Johnson Ralph Johnson John Jones Kimberly Jones Kathy Jourdan Janet Karr Debbie Kern Joseph Kerns Darlena Kilburn Alma Kinney Treasure Kinney Edward Kirch Kerry Kirkman Karen Kirlin 130 Affects Everyone Ladd Kitterman Charles Kootz Pam Kord Laurel Lagenaur Charles Lamb Richard Landreth Tammy Lannom Laura Lauck Darlene Lawson Virgil Lawson Duane Lee Ted Lee Samuel Leonard Ray Littleton Scott Lockhart Howard Long Robert Loutt Ken Lovelady Suzanne Lovell Meryle Lowe 131 Loyalty to Howe Jeff Luedeman Judy Luedeman Chris Lynette Rogetta Lyons Ruth Lyons Julie Maier Kim Main Anita Manson Vanessa Matheny Kelly Mathews Teresa Matthews Greg Mathias Robert Mathies Richard McAndrews Gregory McAfee Marsha McCleery Heather McClure Mark McClure Jenny McCormick Carol McCrae 132 Withstands Years Raejean McDonald Diana McGeath Georgann McGinnis Theresa McGinley Margaret McKain David McKane John McLeod Tod McQuade Robin McRae Andy Meyer Ben Meyers Barbara Middleton Former Howe coach and athletic director Samuel T. We have tried to put together a memory of that year in hopes of reminding the student body and the faculty of a little of what happened during one of the most his- toric times in our lifetime. Though a lot cannot be pictured or even mentioned because it fell after the last deadline, we hope that what we have repre- sented shows more types of life at Howe than the books of years past. We make no apologies for not going Bicentennial because we felt the best way for Howe to celebrate would be to be original and not copy others. Per- haps we have shown life at Howe in the true sense, the sense of season, by neither pushing red, white, and blue 1976 nor abdicating it. For life at Howe centers around seasons, as did the crowning of basketball homecoming queen Cindy Clark at the end of the winter activities. Seasons are the base for school activities and seem to repre- sent the student body as it changes throughout the year. 164
