REVIEW With only two lettermen returning from the 1956 Champion first boat a trying season appeared ahead for Gunnery s 1957 Crew In order to retain the Crew s standing as New England Schoolboy Champions much work was in the ofling for Coach Rod Beebe rn selecting the boats Only after the Triangular Regatta at South Kent were many doubts and feats relieved In this first meet of the year Gunnetys first and second boats won by four and two lengths respectively over St Marks and South Kent Stroke for the victorious first boat was Norm Hines with Ben I-Iagyard at num ber 3 joe Jennings at number 2 jim McKernon at bow and Tony Smith coxrng Returning to South Kent a week later Gunnery again remained victorious with the lst and 2nd boats finishing ahead of the South Kent crews The first boat victors by five lengths towed the half mile in 2 45 breaking the former record of 2 50 for the course On home waters for the first time Gunnery scored a clean sweep against the Roosevelt High Schools oarsmen In choppy Waramaug waters the first boat crossed the line an impressive srx lengths ahead of the opponent s Back on home waters again the Big Red added an other clean sweep to its record the first boat beating the Choate crews by three lengths with the second boat winning by one half a length Both crews got off to poor starts but finished with sustained powerful sptrnts Continuing their unblemrshed record the Gunnery s Varsrty boats flashed over the finish line ahead of the Poughkeepsie High School crews Thrs constituted the 89 third clean sweep of home waters and the fourth of the season It was however a tough race for both schools because of a strong headwmd In their final race of the regular season the Red and Gray met their toughest opposrtron In thrs contest they faced a highly sprrrted Salisbury crew eager to repeat last years upset of the first boat The second crew rowing a very close race took it up too late and placed second behind Salisbury by a dramatic foot mar gin The first boat however took the Salisbury crew down the three quartet mile course easily winning by one and one half lengths With the season completed the first three varsity boats travelled to Worcester Massachusetts to defend their four oated Championship in the New England Interscholastrc Rowing Regatta at Lake Qurnsrga dead boat finished third in the mormng behind Pom fret and Exeter Losrng in a consolation race the Gun nery crew placed fourth behind Pomfret Exeter and Belmont Hills and Salisbury both tied for third Al though the first boat failed to qualify for the finals the second crew did placing third Thus after two consecutive years of being in Gun nery hands the four oared rowing title of New Eng land was given up to Pomfret wlnner in the finals by two and one half lengths The season was rough as much choosing and form mg of new crews had to be done There were no easy races but there were some good and bad days Pros pects for a successful 1958 season are good with srx lettermen returmng from the first two boats .
