REVIEW The 1957 Gunnery Baseball Team started practice with seven regulars back on the dramond plus the addr tion of newcomers Sam Hawley George Renner and Dave Ladewrg john Hillman and Captain Gordre Hall swapped the mound for thrrd base throughout the year Wrth the graduation of last year s Captarn jack Grrggs the team lost rts catcher but the spot was amply filled by bringing rn john Lashar from shortstop and putting Fred Frelds rn the vacant spot between second and third With these changes Coach Buxton drilled the Gunnery batsmen for the approaching season Two weeks after the outset of practice the Red and Gray faced their opener at home agarnst a strong West mrnster team The visitors started off by smashing out a triple followed by a double and a srngle In the bot tom of the srxth Fred Frelds and john Lashar scored the only two Gunnery runs The end saw the home team succumbing to an 8 2 defeat In the second game of the season the Red and Gray lost to Berkshrre 8 6 rn a game marred by errors Cap talll Hall and Fred Frelds collected five of Gunnerys eight hrts Not drscouraged by previous losses the Buckmen trrumphed over South Kent ll 4 George Renner high lighted the game wrth hrs home run rn the srxth Leaving home sorl the Brg Red under the two hrt pitching of John Hillman defeated Salisbury 5 0 Fred Frelds continued hrs superb hrttrng with a four bagger rn the top of the nrnth Gunnery met an overwhelmrng I-Iotchkrss nrne on the home grounds for a 10 0 loss Our fielding errors and batting slump contrrbuted strongly to the worst game of the season In New Haven Gunnery met with rts second consec utrve defeat 10 6 at the hands of a strong Hopkins Grammar team led by Brannon and Mrgnone The only bright spot of the game was the hrttmg of Chris Day and Mrke McCollom who collected two hrts apiece At the second encounter between Gunnery and Salrs bury Captarn Hall prtched the Big Red to a tense 5 4 vrctory Hrllman led the hitters wrth two doubles and a srngle The Buckmen again successfully defended our dra mond agarnst the shaky Canterbury rnfield In the bot tom of the third rnnrng all but one of our lrrreup reached base wrth srx men scoring The game ended wrth an rmpressrve ll 4 Gunnery conquest The returning Alumni edged the Varsrty 9 8 fol lowing up last years wrn In the srxth Renner belted hrs third round trrpper thrs season Nevertheless at the end of nine rnnrngs rt was apparent that the old men strll had a lot left Unable to survrve a destructrve first rnnrng when Berkshrre scored hve runs Gunnery dropped an 11 4 decision Although Captain Hall had two doubles and Sam Hawley two srngles the Red and Gray could only produce three runs off Berkshrre prtchrng Captain Hall prtched a masterful five hrt shutout as Gunnery defeated Taft at Watertown 5 O Nrck Brun ing and Fred Frelds each produced two hrts rn aveng ing last year s loss Both Gunnery s Hall and South Kent s Smrth prtched three hitters but the Buckmen dropped a close decr sron at 2 l South Kent aided by two errors scored all their runs rn the fifth frame The Red and Gray scored rn the first rnnrng on Captain Halls srngle after john Lashar had walked and stolen second Sam Hawley scored from second on a srngle by Cap tain Hall to break a 4 4 deadlock wrth Canterbury rn the nrnth giving Gunnery a 5 4 vrctory The pitcher Captarn Hall allowed only five hrts and struck out seven In the last game of the season the Big Red captured second place rn the Connotonrc League by edging Westminster at Srmsbury 3 2 john Lashar drove rn two of Gunnery s runs wrth a long trrple Next year the prospects look good for producing a first place team wrth only three players graduatrng The remainder of the players because of the experience gained thrs year should compile an excellent record x s ' 9 V ' , ' . . , . . . . . , . . . . , - - - - - -1 n . , ' , .
