REVIEW Wrth last year s two h1gh scorers Charl1e Sm1th and ohn Lashar Capra1n B111 Smyth 1n the goal and l1ne man Cotton Damon the only return1ng lettermen Mr Golembeske s VZISIIY Hockey Squad comp11ed a 2 7 5 record In the1r open1ng game of the season the VHISIIY Hockey Team bowed to Canterbury 5 2 The score was 3 O before newcomer Mrckey Sm1th put Gunnery 1nto the scor1ng column w1th a penalty shot Gunnery s other goal came on a twenty foot shot by Charl1e Sm1th Sparked by M1ckey Sm1th s hat tr1ck and two goals by another newcomer Steve Bent Gunnery overpow ered M11lbrook 8 1 Cotton Damon and Sam Hawley opened up the scor1ng wrth two qu1ck first per1od goals and before the afternoon was over Charl1e Sm1th had also flrcked the M11lbrook nets Capta1n Smyths ex cellent goal tendrng l1m1ted the opposrnon to one tally P1ay1ng the1r first home game of the year the Vars1ty sextet was downed by Tr1n1ty Paw11ng 2 O A late Hrst per1od solo dash and a further tally 1n the second per1od could not be equalled by the Gunnery offense In a return game of the B1 State Hockey League a strong Canterbury Squad proved too much for the Gunnery offense and defense as Gunnery was downed by a count of 5 0 Playrng agalnst Sa11sbury after a qu1ck goal from the opposrnon Char11e Sm1th balanced the score w1th a slap shot ThlS was qurckly followed by a solo dash by Mxckey Sm1th wh1ch gave Gunnery a 2 1 lead Two more Sa11sbury goals set the scene for a game saver from lrneman John Lashar who ta111ed wrth only forty seconds left 1n the game Play1ng the1r second consecut1ve close battle the sextet was edged out by Tr1n1ty Pawl1ng 4 5 rn over t1me After be1ng beh1nd 2 0 second per1od tall1es by Charlre and MlCkCy Sm1th evened the count Follow 1ng another TP score Steve Bent put the game mto overt1me w1th a rebound shot Another close hard fought battle occurred when Gunnery was downed by Sal1sbury 2 l A long Salls bury shot opened up the scor1ng followed by a rebound shot by Charlre Sm1th Great defens1ve play by Mlke Benfield and Sandy Brrstoll and Capta1n B111 Smyth s excellent saves then h1ghl1ghted the game unt11 late 1n the fmal per1od when a solo dash gave Sal1sbury the game Goals by Hawley Lashar Charlre Sm1th and M1ckey Sm1th gave the sextet IIS second VICIOIY of the season as they beat Hopkms Grammar 5 1 Aga1n Benfield and Br1sto1 stood out on defense fa1thfully backed up by B111 Smyth at goal Aga1n a goal by Lashar rn the closmg seconds of the th1rd per1od saved the game for Gunnery P1ay1ng Berksh1re the final score was 4 4 wrth a scoreless over t1me Although Charl1e Sm1th and Lashar scored 111 the first two per1or Gunnery was behxnd 4 2 w1th two mrnutes of play rema1n1ng Mrckey Sm1th then prerced the Berksh1re defense to put Gunnery only one goal down and wrth two seconds left Lashar s second tally of the game t1ed the score Srx flrst per1od goals by Westm1nster led the way to one of the sextet s worst defeats of the year The v1c tors final tally came early 1n the second per1od and from then on Gunnery dom1nated the scor1ng Lashar d1splay1ng some of hlS scor1ng power of last year h1t the Westm1nster nets YWICC as drd Steve Bent mak1ng the final score 7 4 In one of the1r best played games of the season Gunnery held Hotchklss to a 0 0 t1e An excellent goal tend1ng job by joe Lowes and good defens1ve work by M1ke Benfield and Sandy Br1sto1l h1ghl1ghted the game for Gunnery Completely out classed 1n the1r final game of the year a hghtmg Gunnery Hockey Team was downed by Kent 7 1 Steve Bent scored Gunnerys lone goal 1n the th1rd per1od Goal1es joe Lowes and B111 Smyth comb1ned forces to make 36 saves In a post season party John Lashar was elected as the capta1n of the 1957 1958 VHISIIY Hockey Squad . , . . . . .
