REVIEW Wrth fifty three boys out for Soccer the coaches soon whrttled the two squads down to a more work able size after a strenuous two weeks of calrsthemcs during which the more robust members went off to the woods wrth Mr Vaughan Wrth only two returnrng lettermen-Cotton Damon and Fred Fields Mr Will cox soon had a Varsrty squad that more than made up for tts lack of experrence and skrll with enthusiasm and effort Although the figures seem very unrmpres srve they belle the true performance of the Big Red for rn almost every game the forwards well supported by the half backs pushed deep rnto the opposing de fense only to be thwarted by near misses or superb goal keepers such as Choate possessed Apprehensrve of their first league game Gunnery managed to hold the Black and Yellow of Lenox back until the thrrd quarter when Chaunsey Britton tallied two goals to be countered by Pete VanDeventer s lone goal thus reversing Gunnery s 1955 wrn Resplendent rn their new red and gray striped shirts Gunnery took the field agarnst Canterbury for their first away match Non plussed by a very well organ ized Spanish speakrng forward lrne the Wrllcoxmen found themselves scooped time and agarn only to be saved by the agrle cat like actrons of goalie Sam Her rup Holdmg Canterbury scoreless through the first perrod the Gunnery defence rrddled with holes let through two goals before half trme Thereafter Gun nery offered no serious threat and had rt not been for the spasmodrc protectron of backs Cort Damon John Herzrg and John Hrllman the deficrt might have been greater than 4 0 Back rn Washrngton the Brg Red suffered rts third defeat at the hands of an aggressrve Choate J V losing 3 0 Strll the team was lackmg co-ordination and skill whrch could only come from practrce The Choate for wards gave a prevrew of the final outcome by scormg two goals rn the first eleven mrnutes of the game Be fore the Parent s Day crowd the Big Red for the frrst time showed its true colors by a magnrfrcent rally at the end of the game when surely the clock saved Krngswood from defeat But once more Gunnery suf fered a defeat 4 2 wrth Pete VanDeventer and Fred Fields scormg Moving out of the state the Red and Gray after a very altercatrous game on a small sandy soggy pitch was handed its fifth strarght defeat by a lightly burlt Berkshlre team 3 1 Captain Fred Frelds averted the threat of a shutout by blasting a penalty shot past the Berkshrre goalie rn the last perrod On a very damp mrsty day the Red and Gray tra veled to Lrtchfield where after a very fast game vrc tory was retarned by the brrllrant defensive play of rn srde jerry Sullivan Elated by therr 4 3 win confidence was restored to the Gunnery team Desprte a trghtenrng of the Gunnery defence Trrn rty Pawlrng handed Gunnery its seventh defeat Fred Fields scored twrce rn the second half then erry Sul lrvan equalrzed the score rn the thrrd perrod A draw was averted by T Ps final goal 1n the fourth quarter Vrsrtrng Watertown Gunnery handed the Taft JV a 2 0 defeat After this game Mr WIHCOX was heard to say to the opponents I know how you feel to lose Mike Benfield and Fred Fields msured the victory helped along by Sam Herrups thirteen saves Back home the Wrhcoxmen rnfluenced by the rn clement weather and the quicker thrnkrng of the Westminster team suffered a defeat desprte the oppo- srtrons very weak defence jerry Ball scored twice and jerry Sullivan and Fred Fields helped to make up the short srde of a 5 4 defeat Playrng rts thrrd game rn a week Gunnery lost to Windsor Mountarn 3 l John Herzrg and goalie Sam Herrup worked hard to lrmrt the opposltron while Jerry Sullivan tallied The Gunnery s sole goal Determrned to break the all time goal record Cap tam Fred Frelds led the Gunnery team on to the Hop kms Grammar field at New Haven for the last match of the season The Hopkins forwards and strong wrnd completely outclassed the Gunnery team whrch only penetrated the Hopkrns defence about four trmes It IS to Sam Herrup that the team owes its thanks for such a small defeat 4 0 Desprte the figures the team owes a debt to therr very able captain Fred Frelds for his perseverance and determination rn leading a team of novices One other team member deserves mention for hrs outstandrng defensive play as goalre Sam Herrup - Y , , ' 1 1 1 1 , s ' Q , . 1 1 ' 1 1 ' ' 1 1 ' ' . , - , . - .
