members the two coaches had a strong foundation to work upon The lme was heavrer than last year and the backfield had great potennal But rn games the team was slow off the mark and havrng the upper hand many trmes failed to take full advantage The final aggregate of two wrns and five defeats rs not truly representative of a team whrch although strrclten wrth rnjurres maintained hrgh morale throughout the season It rs partrcularly significant that the team won the last two games of the season after five losses Gunnery opened the season with a home game agamst a more powerful and hrghly trained Kent team After seven hard hrttrng plays Kent made the first of a serres of touchdowns which led to a half time score of 21 0 The second half started favorably for Gunnery when Gordre Hall made a 20 yard end run quickly fol lowed by the powerful penetratron of Norm Hines and Pete Smrth catchmg well placed passes from Tom Bra man Later after a fumble the opposing hne stalled the Red and Gray s offensive untrl the fourth quarter when rt was too late to make an apprecrable drfference to the score of 41 0 On Saturday October 13 Gunnery suffered a 35 13 defeat agamst Canterbury rn what proved to be a hot tempered and hrghly contested game In the first period Gunnery s determmed attack was duly crowned by a touchdown by Gordre Hall the extra point bemg blocked by a strong Canterbury defence More evrdent rn the second perrod Canterbury with qutck passmg and fast runnlng scored 20 points Rising penaltres motivated the Gunnery team into an aggressrve fourth quarter the hne hrt harder and the tackling became more determmed during this period john Lashar broke through for a touchdown making the final score 35 13 In the seasons thrrd encounter any Red and Gray optrmrsm was dashed by the strong Berkshire advance As agamst Canterbury the team once more falled to master an 1nfer1or lrne and thus allowed the opposing backfreld to consrstently push over for great garns Fall ure to get off the mark put Gunnery 20 pomts down at the half In the second half the plays were more success ful and Tom Braman completed a 30 yard pass to Gordre Hall who scored At the change of the quarters once more Tom Braman connected this time wrth Pete Sheffield who went over for a touchdown Gordre Hall completed the krck makmg the final score 26 13 rn Berkshire s favor Travellrng to Pomfret Gunnery won the toss for the first time but a fumble on the kick off was he first of a serres of setbacks that plagued the Red and Gray through most of the first half Rallyrng in the second half Gunnery scored on a pass from john Lashar to Kim Hart but time runnmg out on the Pomfret 10 yard hne prevented a second Gunnery score Lapsrng rn the third perrod Gunnery failed to prevent two more Pomfret touchdowns Later John Lashar threw a pass to Jack Brown and Ben Hagyard barged through for 75 yards makmg the final score 31 12 In their last home game Gunnery farled to master Trrnrty Pawlrng s deceptive splrt T formatton and went down to defeat for the fifth time Gunnery s pos session of the ball was short lived for by the end of the first quarter Gunnery was trailing by two touchdowns By the half the TP quarterback had made a connectron for a touchdown and with seconds to go rn the first half receiving a pass from John Lashar Gordre Hall made Gunnery s only score Playrng a wide open game Gunnery held the score down untrl the last quarter when a 40 yard TP run made the final score 31 6 It was rn the Hopkins Grammar game that Gun nery excelled Evenly matched for the first quarter Gunnery was put ahead by Tom Braman s pass to Gor dre Hall who streaked 15 yards for a touchdown Hop kms retaliated making their only score from an end run A grrmly determined Gunnery team took the field rn the second half Hopkins soon felt the rmpact of the Red and Gray attack when Tom Braman connected with Pete Sheflield who made another touchdown Gordre Hall kicked the extra point and followed thrs later by zrpprng around the end for another Gunnery score Movmg the ball at wrll Ben Hagyard scored for Gunnery from the frve yard hne off guard Final score 2 6 Supported by the whole school the Red and Gray went to South Kent determmed to round off the season with a vrctory South Kents rnrtral touchdown in the first period was countered by Ben Hagyard drrvmg off tackle and makmg a spectacular 74 yard run for a touchdown Gordre Hall smashed through the line makmg the score 7 6 In the last minutes South Kent was wrthrn the Gunnery 10 yard line but a sturdy de fence and the clock saved defeat Captamrng a losing team Fred Melrus showed his magnnticent morale rarsrng faculty rn the final vrctorres Under hrs able leadership the team cohered and showed its true form Directed by Mr. Day Lee who was assisted by President Richard Gebhardr and composed of 53622 of the school the Second Cen- tury Committee acts as the school s hospitality commit- tee at major school functions. This year these events included Parents Day the Father and Son Dinner and Alumni Day. On these occasions the duties performed were: helping with registration and parking serving refreshments and cleaning up. The Second Century Committee also assumes the responsibility of showing prospective students around the school. It is behind the scenes in their club s office however that the members perform their most important duty. This consists of mailing school literature such as The Alumni Newr to the parents Alumni and friends of the school. The Christmas mural a painting of the Na- tivity which contributed greatly to creating a true holi- day atmosphere in the church was also designed and painted by members of the club. Slcetching out of doors as well as studio work on free afternoons comprised a large part of the clubs actiyities Another sphere of action in which the club participated was entry into the travelling exhibitions of the Housatonic Art Association. This art show in which ten preparatory schools compete travels from one member school to another exhibiting the winning works.
