iuvvhi f'---1 771501001 .g.- MORTELL WILLIAMS vwullmgq Ninety-two SCI-IAFER 'J 1 CONLEY SINKS ONE AGAINST TAFT VARSITY BASKETBALL REVIEW Gunnery started its dominating season march by defeating a good Trinity Pawling quintet 70 65 Gunnery held a sizable lead throughout the game and held off a Trinity rally to cop the game Bob Mortell amassed 39 points to take game honors while Conley chipped in with 10 In what almost proved to be the mayor upset of the season Gunnery eeked out a 39 58 victory over a stubborn Berkshire five The Gunnery throttled by an unusual zone defense rallied in the later stages of the game to pull out its second win of the season Conley led Gunnery with eleven points followed by Dillon and Mortell with nine each Playing its first home game of the season Gunnery had little trouble in defeating a usually good Kent team From the start it was Red and Gray all the way Mortell proved to be the big difference between the two teams and the tall slender Captain poured through 30 points while Conley meshed 19 Gunnerys fighting quintet chalked up another league victory by defeating Hotchkiss 50 35 Ahead by only one scant point at the end of the first half 25 72 Gunnery put on a second half splurge to deliver themselves from any conceivable danger Once ag un Gunnery s big six foot eight inch center Bob Mortell led all scorers He collected '77 points while Wyckoff and Conley split I6 points evenly betvs een them In their hrst non-leigue meeting Gunnery ran its record to 5-0 by easily defeating an inferior Westminster quintet. Mortell with 24 points took game honors. The two guards, Wyckoff and Conley, each added 15 points. In what proved to be one of the most free scoring games during the season, a good Canterbury team handed the Red and Gray its first loss of the season, 71 70. Gunnery held a 40-35 half-time lead, but Canterbury chipped away this lead during the second half and in the final minutes clinched their win. Mortell led all scorers with 50 points while Williams and Wyckoff tallied 13 and ll respectively. Meeting Berkshire for the second time, Gunnery proved, without a doubt, that they were the better team. They easily routed Berkshire, 71-46. Once again Gunnery's big center was the highlight of the game, collecting 31 points to lead all scorers. Gunnery was forced to put on a 29 point last period rally in order to over- come a stiff Hopkins Grammar five. Trailing by eight points at the half, the
