D D MILLER SCHAFER 'Y Eighty ADAMS DILLON HITS A CANTERBURY WALL VARSITY FOOTBALL REVIEW In the fall of 1954 The Gunnery Varsity Football Team posted a 3 vun 3 loss I tie record With seven returning lettermen Coaches Beebe and Golembeske had one week to drill the new team before the opening contest October 2 the Red and Gray traveled to New Haven to open its season against Hopkins Grammar and were defeated I9-0. The Gunnery narrowly missed scoring in the first period but the Hopkins line held fast and Gunnery never was a threat again. Hopkins hard running and blocking resulted in a score for the home team in each of the remaining periods. The Gunnery suffered its second loss of the season October 9 at the hands of a spirited Pomfret team, 6-O. The lone score came in the second period on a short line plunge culminating a long Pomfret march. The contest was well played, and improvements were seen in the Gunnery line as it gained confidence and experience
