www Wwe DAMON BENTLEY HARMON 1954 CREW REVIEW May 15 was the occasion in Worcester Mass of the annual Quinsigamund Preparatory School Regatta the crew mens World Series The Gunnerys record in 1954 at this event was outstanding Not only did the First Boat take a good second place behind Brown and Nichols in 4 I9 over the three quarter mile course but also beat South Kent for the first time in its five year rowing history In the morning qualifying heat the first shell placed Hrst followed by South Kent and Salisbury In the afternoon finals The Gunnery s Seconds were fourth behind Brown and Nrchols South Kent and Belmont Hill Also note worthy was the victory of Tom Thornbury and Fred Beck who teamed with two rowers from Brown and Nichols to take that special event Traveling to Salisbury May 21 the First Boat was victorious but the Seconds and Thirds were defeated. In taking the First Boat race by one and one-half lengths the First Crew paced by jay Thomson at stroke with jack McKernon Tom Hanan Tom Wood and Dean Matthews CCoxD established a new M mile record for the Salisbury Course 4.14. The Gunnery 'Galley Slaves lost by two lengths in the Second and Third Boat competition. As hosts to Poughkeepsie High School May 29 the first three boats culminated their season with a triple sweep in the afternoon s races. The First Shell won by five lengths in 4.42. The Second Crew composed of Dan Harmon Bill Bentley Fred Beck jim ohnson and Cotton Damon fCoxJ won easily by six lengths. Rowing its best race of the campaign the Red and Gray Third Boat with Phil Houck Tom Thornbury Brent Malcolm Bob Ebers and Cox Phil Willard maintained a sizeable margin of six winning lengths. Tom Hanan, number two man in the First Boat was re-elected captain of next year's squad. 77 wt? M! JOHNSON MALCOLM
