EDITORIAL It has been the object of this Refi and Gmg to publish as accurate and as complete a record and memento of the School Year 1955 54 at The Gunne y as possible The compiling of data and material about this past year was as in my year a long and sometimes difficult task This work has made us survey more closely however the incidents experiences and accomplishments of the year It is not difficult to cite several noteworthy gains in the progress and development of the School First of all The Gunnery opened in the fall with an enrollment of 141 boys the largest in its history Space and facilities permitting the population of the School is expected to be even larger in the coming year The mention of space and facilities brings to mind the completion of the long awaited Memorial Activities Burlding Here at last is a structure which satisfies many of The Gunnery s needs Besides providing domitory space for fifteen students the building also provides a room for the study and exhibition of art a snack bar a lounge complete with television and high fidelity phono gymnasium Here not only is a completely useful building but also something which embodies the efforts and contributions of many people for The Gunnery during its one hunderd and four years The Gunnery was extremely active internationally as five Seniors from the graduating class were awarded English Exchange Scholarships for study in England for the coming year An additional Senior was awarded a scholar ship for study in France during the summer There were also three boys from England Greece and Siam enrolled this year Durmg the winter term The Gunnery was visited by two boys from Korea and the Phillipines Also note worthy in the scholastic field was the election of five Seniors to the Cum Laude Society Needless to say the most important gains the intangible ones cannot be measured exactly or at this time But The Gunnery N eu: seemed to come the closest to it when it said With the graduation of thirty six men of the Class of 54 the School is saying good bye to one of the most responsible senior classes in School history It has entailed a great amount of toil to prepare and publish this 1954 Red and Gray but if we have succeeded in producing a yearbook of permanent not just temporary interest then our primary goal has been attained 4 .
