gli if HANAN WOOD MATTHEWS MCKERNON sw THOMSON 1954 CREW REVIEW Among the large number of prospective bladesmen who presented them selves at the Crew Squad s first practice session on Lake Waramaug Coach Beebe found only two returning lettermen Tom Hanan and jack McKernon Also present were a number of experienced rowers from the previous season s Third Fourth and Fifth Boats including Beck Bentley johnson Malcolm Thomson Thornbury and Wood Journeying to Southboro Mass April 24 for the first meet of the season a regatta with South Kent St Marks and The Gunnery participating the Red and Gray was defeated in all three races. In the First Boat competition South Kent took the lead at the beginning of the one half mile sprint and surged on to win over St. Mark s by two lengths and Gunnery by four lengths. The Second Boat stroked the closest race of the meet losing by a length and a quarter to South Kent. South Kent also took the Third Boat event. The following Saturday Lake Waramaug was the scene of South Kent- Gunnery rowing. The Gunnery took the lead but was nosed out in the half mile race of the First Boat event by six feet. Gunnery s Second Boat skimmed across the finish line half a length ahead of South Kent winning in 4.50 time. The visitors copped the Third Boat race by half a length. May 5 Arlington High Schools top three shells traveled to Lake Wata- maug. The Red and Gray s first crew maintained a sizeable lead throughout the X4 mile course winning its first victory of the season. The Gunnery s triumph was complete as the Seconds and Thirds won the following two races. At Wallingford on a rainy May 8 the First Boat was out-stroked by a spirited Choate crew the winner s time over the Mg of a mile distance being 2.26. The Second Boat lost by a decks length in its race and the Thirds were outdistanced by a single length. 76
