I 'Q 9' WW' 'V vL':.r25,M WILLIAMS D D MILLER GRIGGS 1954 BASEBALL REVIEW Ireland singled in the seventh The pitching of Brownell plus hits by Phelon Downs and Dave Miller gave The Gunnery the 3 I victory After a postponement the Red and Gray played a League game with Choate in Washington May 17 The visitors took the game 7 5 in ten innings Brownell was the chucker being rapped for ten hits and four earned runs WyckoH and Schereschewsky each had two singles May 19 at Berkshire The Gunnery took a 5 2 decision over the Green A double by Phelon and a hit by Dave Miller drove in the necessary runs for the win Sumner was the Gunnery pitcher giving up six hits and fanning five batters Salisbury was the scene of a 2 0 shutout May 24 The contest was settled in the third and sixth innings as Salisbury scored two unearned runs while touching Manning and Sumner for one hit during the entire game The Varsity carried a one run lead into the sixth against Loomis on the Gunnery field two days later but the visitors tallied twice in the sixth and five more times in the seventh to record a 7-1 win. Brownell pitched the whole game. Phelon and Dwight Miller each supplied a pair of hits for the losing cause. Canterbury avenged its previous defeat as the Red and Gray played a sloppy game before an Alumni Day throng May 29. Sumner pitched well but received poor support as there were five errors. Brownell Phelon and Scheres- chewsky each produced two hits. The I954 baseball season ended june 2 in Washington as The Gunnery lost to Taft in an eleven inning League tilt 5-2. Brownell chucked allowing eight hits and striking out nine. Again sloppy fielding was the reason for the defeat. The season's record of 3-9 was not at all indicative of the teams poten- tial. A tendency to commit costly errors in bunches, plus an apparent inability to hit with men on base, were the principal reasons for the poor showing. The team's leading hitter, Bob WyckoE, was elected captain for the 1955 campaign. 71 ., ,. A4- SUMNER , 9 - . -- - : Fu- 'Y' A. . . ,.. .v.... DOWNS
