'bw' sump PHELON D P MILLER B SCHERESCHEWSKY BROWNELL ,- 1 WYCKOFF 1954 BASEBALL REVIEW As Coach Edward Buxton surveyed h1s baseball prospects on the soggy diamond in those rainy days of April he had four lettermen from the previous season s team Captain Bob Phelon and Dave Miller both on the first nine for three years and G11 Williams and jim Conley The early performances of some newcomers seemed to promise a successful season In its opener April 21 at Kent the Red and Gray dropped a 5 4 decision when Kent pushed across the winning run on a squeeze play in the tenth inning ack Manning was the starting pitcher but was relieved by Tom Brownell in the fifth The Gunnery led through most of the game but lost the lead in late innings Brownell led the batters with a triple and single Three days later the team opened the home season by losing 4 2 to Trinity Pawling Steve Sumner was reached for four runs on four hits in the first lnfllllg but pitched shutout ball allowing one hit for the duration of the game Griggs and Williams crossed the plate for the losers two runs April 28 The Gunnery met South Kent at home in a slug fest The Red and Gray took the game 10 9 as Bob Phelon drilled three home runs winning the contest in the ninth with a three run homer He batted in eight runs for the day Brad Schereschewsky banged out four hits while Bob Vfyckoif ac counted for three safeties At Lakeville May 1 the Red and Gray took an early one run lead against Hotchkiss The home team countered with four runs in the fifth and one rn the seventh to triumph 5 2 Brownell went the distance allowing five hits and batting out two himself The Gunnery lost its fourth game on May 5 as Wooster edged the Buck men 4 3 in Danbury Hits by Phelon, Brownell, Manning, and Dave Miller gave the v1s1tors a 3 2 lead in the sixth inning but Wooster retaliated with two in the same inning to take the game Manning and Sumner shared hurling duties giving up five hits and two earned runs Brownell narrowly missed a no hitter at Canterbury a week later as 70
