Y -z 1953 SOCCER REVIEW The opening of the l9D5 Soccer season wit nessed the return of only three lettermen Cap tain Dick Clarke john Fisher and Bob Mortell from the preceding year The team literally ran through its first two w eeks of practice under new coaches Mr john Riccitelli and Mr Michael Post to ready itself for the first game The initial contest was played October 8 with Forman providing the opposition on the home field From the start the game resolved it self into a battle of defenses The first goal of the season by ohn Fisher in the first period was match d by Forman in the second and it was not until the second overtime period that Brit ish Exchange Student Bob Horwood decided the contest with a timely tally The second game followed on the heels of the first two days later and the final whistle showed the Red and Gray on the short end of a l 0 score at Lenox Despite a momentary lapse in the defense early in the first period backs Clarke Horwood and Zeffiro did a good job protecting the goal Back on familiar territory October 14 the team regained winning form in edging Canter bury in a close match l 0 The goal materialized late in the second half on a hard drive into the nets by Fisher but it was only spectacular goal tending by Larry Hoyt who thwarted a late attempt on a penalty shot that preserved the win. On the road for the second time the team suffered a heartbreaking l-0 loss October 17 at the hands of a scrappy Choate J.V. club. Mortell and Stenstream filling in for the absent Zeffiro were outstanding in defensive roles. The Big Red suffered its third defeat October 21 at Washington against Berkshire 5-2. The Green was far superior and only goals by Mac- Kenzie and Fisher averted a shutout. The best game of the season was played three days later at Kingswood. Early in the third quar- ter Fisher headed in an out-of-bounds kick by Morrell to give The Gunnery a 1-O lead. This lasted until a desperate Kingswood team tied it up with less than two minutes remaining. Slater Vartes and Clarke were standouts in this ex- tremely rough contest. Returning home the Red and Gray tied the Taft j.V. s l-1, October 29 on a rain-soaked field. An early goal by on Slater and a brilliant de- HOYT ALDERMAN Hoawooo 53 MORTELL
