Class Hfsfory In the fall of the year 1941 workmen were laborlng flercely 1n a heart breaklng race agamst txme It would only be a few days now untll the Class of 45 would be assembled for the f1rst tlme The men knew full well as they sweated and slaved IH the awesome confuslon of l1n oleum cement flxtures and wood that they must not fall ln the1r IIIISSIOII Thexrs was to be the best and most modern hlgh school ln the country completed that th1S Class of 45 mxght start out l1fe ln a style beflttlng them That school was completed and the Class of 45 never hesxtated 1n maklng the most of lt In those frlvolous prewar days when men were c1x1l1ans and upper classmen vuere men fthose were the days of our ChalTlplOl1Sh1p football team? the may of a freshman was not an easy one However undaunted but cautlous the embryon1c class embarked on 1ts four year Journey by electlng offlcers happlly representatlve of both Wllson and Colonel Wr1ght graduates Old hatchets were Push up Days CWatch Our Dusty they proceeded to demonstrate Th1s dust was qulte consplcuous the nlght of thelr f1rst b1g football rally You see 1n1t1at1ons 1n those days were shall we say taken llterally' To th1S day they refuse to take the dec1s1on of the Judges concernlng the noxse rally of that nlght Old Thor hlmself would have had an headache for a week had he heard the Class of 45 that evenlng It was undoubtedly trad1t1on that permltted the Semors to w1n Th1s was also the year that the Operetta Flrefly was so proflclently produced The Class of 45 was cer tamly responslble for a good share of 1ts unforgettable color Indeed two gxrls from th1s class took leads g1v1ng br1ll1ant performances By the tlme the class adopted the momker Sopho mores It was apparent that they were much more than a med1ocre group Worklng on a war theme the b1g foot ball rally of that year was 1n the form of a scrap dr1ve OH CORN 'H J'D.3 ----UW'-1 bANb,v.9 ' ' BOIIVG ' and noxse rally Naturally endued wlth a lot of scrap the Class of 45 easlly won They set a precedent that year by producxng a Sophomore Assembly It met wlth such success that the ldea was later taken up by the rest of the classes and now has become qulte the thlng Th1s f1rst assembly saw the blrth of an old fashloned melo drama produced wlth such sk1ll that clubs and Ol anlza tlons throughout the c1ty were begglng to have these young Thosplans present thelr slde spl1tt1ng drama Athletes were not alxen to the Class of 45 As Fresh men they all but took over Papoose football and basket ball As Sophomores they had three players on the f1rst strmg football squad and aga1n the Papoose squad swarmed wlth them Thelr Jumor year saw them wnth seven f1rst strmgers 1n football two 1n basketball The glrls m the meantxme had almost unammously taken up G A A and wlth commendable consequences As Senlors aga1n they had seven mam strmgers and several more subs m football Basketball players were also much 1n ev1dence Thelr Semor year marked the fourth stralght year 1n which they have copped the lntramural basketball champlonshlp The Jumor play showed the people of The Dalles what stage productlons should be lxke The class s Jun lor year productlon The Man Who Came to Dlnner was halled as the best 1n years In fact It was the best to be seen untll the Senlor play Sm1l1n Thru another sellout They were a smart class th1s Class of 45 They had to be to account for 7 of the 32 members of Torch Honor as Sophomores 12 of the 28 as Junlors and termlnate wlth 12 wearlng Llfe Torch Plns They were a brave and strong class The armed forces have taken a l1on s share of the1r boys We pray that they w1ll be g1ven back We pray too that the memorles of th1s great class w1ll not be forgotten Duff Young 7716 OUT-DOO f'YPE V?
